I’ve recently found pressing the Digital Crown to be pretty hit or miss. I often need to press it a couple of times, making sure I press straight down it, maybe without triggering the scroll function in the process. Though I can’t be pressing the Crown any differently from how I always have, yet I’m pretty sure I notice a difference in reactiveness.

Am I going mad or has anyone else noticed anything similar?

On my S9 I would say that 1 or 2 out of 10 presses goes unregistred by the watch yet the crown physically clicks.

The watch is 30 days old. Got the Stainless steel version at a massive discount (180$ off) when S10 launched

You’re probably not going mad, but it’s almost certainly just your watch.

Well, not that yours is the only watch where this is happening — rather that … um …

All but guaranteed you’ve got some dirt caught in the mechanism. Try holding the watch under the faucet of a running sink (not any sort of spray mode, just a normal stream) as you spin the dial and press the button. This is probably all it needs.

If that doesn’t do the trick, don’t try anything more aggressive; you’re much more likely to make things worse at that point.

If you have AppleCare, use it. If you don’t, take it to either an Apple Store or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider (such as Best Buy) and ask them how much it’ll cost to fix it — and decide then whether that cost is best applied to fixing it or to buying a replacement, this time with AppleCare.

Cheers,

You’re not going mad. I noticed the exact same thing with my U2 around the time of the latest software upgrade. Pressing crown is less responsive. It’s not our imagination.

Yes that’s what I’m describing too - crown physically clicks, but goes unregistered

Thanks for your reply. I wonder if it’s something they’ll be able to diagnose though or if it’s too sporadic an issue to discern ?

Ahh interesting! Wonder if anyone else can corroborate?

Same with my U2, brand new.
Approx. 2 out of 10 presses goes unregistred, even if it clicks.
I also had a regular 10 with the same issue.
Guess it is a SW bug of some kind?

Works every time on my 1+ yr old U2, on the latest official OS

I’ve been experiencing the same issue with my Apple Watch 2. Occasionally, I have to press the crown twice for it to open the Apps Menu. This started happening a few months ago, and I’m hoping it’s just a software-related problem since the crown only acts up in this particular scenario.

This sounds like an early September, new yearly release software upgrade bug, with not ready for prime time yet software.

I noticed this issue the moment I upgraded to Watch OS 11 (a year-old Ultra 2 and new black Ultra 2), the main cause at least for me is the crown scrolling down to bring up notifications or even scrolling up. It takes an incredibly tiny movement down or up when pressing the crown to bring up those menus, so when you want to access the apps you end up causing a slight movement in either direction (mainly down I’ve noticed) which the watch then ignores as it thinks you pressed the button to enter the clock face. This then ends up looking like a button press that's done nothing.

Apple has for some reason made the up and down menu triggers stupidly sensitive. If they decreased the sensitivity so it requires a little more movement down or up first, then I'm pretty confident this issue would be solved.

I can easily replicate this at any time, if I put my finger on the side of the crown and turn it down ever so slightly while pressing it I can make it look like a missed button press without even bring down the notification screen. If I press it dead flat, then the button works as it’s supposed to 100% of the time. Crown is fine, it's Apple's crappy programming once again.

Yes I think you’ve hit the nail on the head

I’m also experiencing issues with the digital crown and touchscreen on my AW10. Specifically, the digital crown doesn’t always respond when I try to press it to open the app menu—it often requires multiple presses to activate. Then, once I’m in the app menu, the touchscreen won’t respond on the first tap either. I have to tap again to get it to work.
Has anyone else encountered this specific problem with touchscreen or is it normal?
