Anyone who’s rocking the new iPhone X ceaseless, got any tips and advice in preventing your iPhone from scratching?

I’ve noticed scratches on my new iPhone X, and it’s likely from my jean’s pocket interior... it’s raw denim so it isn’t soft and quite rough, the stitching that’s between the cloth inside the pocket and denim is likely scratching it too. :(

If you prefer to use the phone without a case I'd suggest a minimalistic sleeve to slip it into when you're not using it. That would prevent your jeans or anything else from scratching it. You can also use it as a resting pad when you're not using the phone but it's not going back in your pocket.

I find it hard to believe that fabric is scratching your iPhone but I could be mistaken. Are you setting it on a hard table or maybe inadvertently raking it across rivets on your jeans?

At any rate, as you are the caseless I think you're going to have to accept some minor scratches. I hope you got Applecare in case you drop it.

There are both, front and back screen protectors on Amazon for the X. Would recommend it.

This. That's the risk anyone takes when you decide to use the phone without any type of protection. And if you do use the phone without any type of case or screen protector, then you also accept the fact that you will accrue minor scratches, no matter how durable you think the iPhone is.

Good idea. I definitely use my spare iPad Smart Cover as a resting pad, as well as mouse pads, paper at school (to avoid dirt and debris on desks), etc. However my screen is what concerns me more than the back. It has more apparent scratches than the back sadly.

Me too, but I can’t figure out how I got two noticeable scratches and a bunch of micro scratches even tho I’ve tried my best to avoid them. My pants are really fitted, they’re raw denim rough, and the stitching is protruding stiffly. When I pull it out my pocket it’s grinding hard when it’s being yanked. Tho I can be mistaken and it’s not the pocket, but I’m weary of where I pull it out and how I pull it out, and where I place it. I just really wanna know what I’m doing wrong after having two scratches.

I honestly think they're unavoidable these days. Apple is all about making their screens less prone to impact breakage and thus makes them more scratch prone. I had a significant scratch on my first iPhone 8 that (lucky for me) had another defect that warranted an exchange so I didn't have to return/rebuy. I also received a deep scratch on my Series 3 Apple Watch and had no idea how. I had my Series 1 for almost a year and it had only slight scuffs.

Because of this, I've had my X in a case and screen protector from day one.

if you care about scratches, you should go with case and screen protector. You cannot scratch it with keys or knives, but you will get a lot of scratches with every day use, on idea how those get there...

I don't think it's the jeans. I think it's the particulates that have gathered in the pocket. The dust and other pocket lint can actually be some pretty abrasive stuff. Be a really good idea to turn them inside out on a regular basis and remove it.

And when the pockets are turned inside it, use a lint roller to collect any debris you can't see.

It will get scratched if you don't put a case on it. Period. This isn't rocket science.

Preventing scratches on iPhone X absolutely is a difficult task because of the stupid stainless steel border. Normally, screen protectors and a case with good material and design would do.

For iPhone X, the weakness link is the border. The way the stainless steel is used on iPhone X is unreasonable from scratch resistance standpoint. It is not the same as say, 10 year old iPhone 3GS where the stainless steel or chrome border is only half-width. Even the SIM tray cover is made of shiny metallic like material increases the chance of scratches/dents in the area over time.

Out of the box, if you use strong bright white LED to inspect it, you will find imperfection because I did. Stainless steel is strong but is extremely prone to marring. If brushed stainless steel, it would have been a bit better.

So in case of iPhone X, having a case is an absolute must. To be more critical, it is best to find case with only soft TPU in direct contact of iPhone X. You can get two-pieces or multiple pieces case but the main point is TPU or leather or silicone should be the medium which is in direct contact with the stainless steel border. Besides, I would avoid choosing cases which are tight fit because putting the iPhone X in and out of the phone case would abrade the stainless steel border if the material is too hard.

There is one other solution -- putting a skin that covers the stainless steel/space grey stainless steel border of iPhone X in addition to a case.

Would you recommend Apple's standard case? Doesn't change the overall look too much, but i'm not sure if it'll actually protect the phone from scratches, considering the lower part is open, and even hits and bumps.

I bought a thin case but lost the glass feel and was still getting scratches on the band. So I bought some utomic edges. Doesn’t look too bad and will actually help in a fall or drop.

I've used my iPad Pro and past iPhones without screen protectors and I am generally careful about it. Nothing to worry about. With the iPhone X, I found something unusual about the scratches forming a smudge in a specific area and checked it out with a 20x jewellery's loupe, which is less powerful than the lighted scope the Genius Bar engineers use, and found some very surprising "cosmetic flaws" (you can find my thread below: "Fine scratches on new iPhone X OLED display"). Apple took an interest in my case and just last night I got a replacement iPhone X. I should add that these weren't the usual scratches all over the screen, but very specific and there may be a batch of screens where the fused oleophobic coating done by Samsung to Apple's specifications are defective. It's nothing like #staingate on the Sharp produced LCD Retina displays for the MacBook Pro of note. There scratches are microscopic grooves (in my case), and it will take a item with microscopic attributes to produce it unless it's caused chemically by very fine abrasives in a localised manner.

I don't think regular use should cause scratches on the best quality gorilla glass to be used on the iPhone X, but as precaution now, I switched to a wallet case so I can enjoy the feel of the new screen instead of some protector. That's what I'd recommend.

The Apple standard case is great in the sense that it has microfibre lining on the inside and the case isn't too hard on the border of the iPhone X. However, since the bottom is exposed, it doesn't have adequate protection on the bottom.

Case comes down to individual preference and where the phone is normally used. I would say the general thumb is to get a case where the material in direct contact with the border of the phone is made of soft and gentle material, such as soft TPU, microfibre lining, etc. Of course, regular cleaning is essential because debris could accumulate over time inside the case which abrades the border eventually.

Out of the box, I noticed a very light and short straight line ( 1-2mm) on the screen on one iPhone X and I bet it is the oleophobic coating that gets scratched. I also saw similar stuff on previous iPhones, as well as various iPad/iPad Pro. Also on the new 13" MacBook Pro. Nothing is perfect. Since I always put a screen protector on Apple devices, I usually accept the flaw unless it is really deep. Those flaws were usually seen under very bright white light.

do not clean or wipe your phone with any fabric!

Microfibers is a fabric and I use that regularly to clean my devices and I have no issue with scratches. Although, One needs to make sure that they rotate a clean microfiber cloth every so often as well, as they can trap debris and can become problematic.

Ok, why do people care if it gets scratched? It comes in contact with the environment, after all. It's a *phone*, not art.

Myself, I put a case on the phone because I'm a klutz. I put a screen protector on it because I like a matte screen that I can see outside in the sun. But this dance people do? Why don't you take the phone, and put it in one of those foodsaver bags and vacuum-shrink it so the environment can't touch it? Ridiculous, I know, but that's where this ends up.
