Ok, why do people care if it gets scratched? It comes in contact with the environment, after all. It's a *phone*, not art.

Myself, I put a case on the phone because I'm a klutz. I put a screen protector on it because I like a matte screen that I can see outside in the sun. But this dance people do? Why don't you take the phone, and put it in one of those foodsaver bags and vacuum-shrink it so the environment can't touch it? Ridiculous, I know, but that's where this ends up.

I use to be more paranoid about the condition of my phone when I would upgrade every few months simply because of resale value. Now I keep my phones ~2 years and resale is not a concern. It is a lot nicer being able to use a phone carefree.

I hate cases myself but I've been using one of these TOZO cases, its form fitting to the phone so it doesnt even feel like you have a case... it's a thin film so it wont protect against drops but it will protect against scratches at least:

it's cheap enough that you can order one and give it a try and if you dont like it then throw it in a drawer.

Good idea. I definitely use my spare iPad Smart Cover as a resting pad, as well as mouse pads, paper at school (to avoid dirt and debris on desks), etc. However my screen is what concerns me more than the back. It has more apparent scratches than the back sadly.

Me too, but I can’t figure out how I got two noticeable scratches and a bunch of micro scratches even tho I’ve tried my best to avoid them. My pants are really fitted, they’re raw denim rough, and the stitching is protruding stiffly. When I pull it out my pocket it’s grinding hard when it’s being yanked. Tho I can be mistaken and it’s not the pocket, but I’m weary of where I pull it out and how I pull it out, and where I place it. I just really wanna know what I’m doing wrong after having two scratches.
Dirt in pocket. Denim can’t scratch it. But dirt specks trapped in denim can.

I don't even know if it's possible to prevent scratches. I've had mine in a case and with a screen protector before I even first turned it on.
I've got a few marks across the top of the steel and one down the side I can feel with my nail. Plus lots of micro scratches.
Personally I think the polished stainless steel was a dumb idea, brushed would have looked better and disguised scratches

Newbie to the forum and I had to chime in given my experiences with multiple iPhone X's. I may have set a record for the number of X's i've gone through - 12. I'm serious. And every SINGLE one had imperfections. I finally had to settle and realize that I wasn't going to get a perfect $1200 phone (I got the 256 model). Naturally, I'm OCD - but I can live with scratches that I've caused myself (even though they'd still bug me). But I did the unwise thing and carefully examined each one straight out of the box - under a bright light at different angles. Each time, I was excited to finally have found "the one", but without fail, I would find something right before I was ready to declare it perfect. Many had scratches on the sides, some had minor nicks/dents in the plastic around the edge, two actually had some strange cloudy discoloration smudges on the sides that couldn't be wiped off.

I eventually settled for one with a minor scratch on the bezel - I figured I'd get them anyway despite using a case since these things scratch if you look at them wrong.

So for anyone that claims to have a pristine phone, especially after weeks of use - you aren't looking hard enough and/or you're not OCD enough. Which is a good thing. Trust me. I'm exhausted after many trips to Apple stores.

Not judging, because I want a pristine phone also. But there is no material used to make jeans that will scratch any part of the phone except maybe the metal rivets. There are plenty of particles in pockets that will however.

There are only two choices: leave the phone naked and accept that glass and sides will get scratched, or put it in a case and screen protector to minimize scratches. Cases will also allow scratching due to trapped debris.

I thought I was unlucky with my past purchases but this is really unlucky. I almost went back to Apple tonight because the steel on my X had several marks straight out of the box, one I could feel with my fingernail.
I changed my mind and haven't bothered because I guessed I wouldn't get one without some marks.

The iPhone X is the 8th iPhone I've had including replacements, every single one has had damage straight out of the box. Maybe I'm being too picky but every other piece of Apple hardware I've bought has been flawless, it's only the phones.

I am also in the same league as in not using the screen protector but OP I would still use a back case to prevent my iPhone X from any damage. I have been using a iPhone 4S without any screen protector for 5 years now and I don't see any scratch on it. But I do use a back cover/case.
