Preview Icons in column view ( screenshot )

I just happened to be browsing through the Tiger training vids on Lynda.com
recently and noticed the guy doing the vid was browsing in column view and
had preview icons. How exactly is this possible?

The setup looked pretty stock, standard dock icons etc etc so I'm doubtful
he would have had 3rd party apps installed to mess with the finder. I can't
reproduce this on my PB 10.4.5, can you?

Someone has suggest to me the preview icons are there because the files have been created and associated with Photoshop, or another program that creates icon previews.

I get previews in column view, but interestingly not for all image files. In the screenshot below, all the photos were taken with the same camera, and none have been edited and as you can see, some have previews, some don't.

I don't have any hacks or anything like that installed, just using the plain old Finder

Edit: Just seen your second post - although I haven't edited the photos, it is possible that I have opened them in iPhoto/Photoshop, so this could well be the case.

Edit 2: I have just opened the inspector and looked at all the photos - they all are associated with Preview, but all the ones without previews are portrait, whereas all the ones with are landscape. Perhaps previews aren't calculated for images outside certain dimensions or rotation.

I can't get a preiew icon for any file. I have a bunch of landscape sized jpegs taken straight from my digicam, 1600x1200 and these have regular preview icons.

I'm baffled :-/

Do a search on versiontracker for Pinki or Pic2icon - it will add icons to all your jpgs.

It's not so much I want jpeg previews in column view, more it's annoying not to know the rules that the OS adheres to. As Kernow shows, it's not straightforward.

It's not OSX, it's dependent on the app that created the file in the first place. Not all creating methods include a thumbnail.

In my experience of the way OS X handles file icons, that's not the case.

As soon as you change a file to open with ~insert application here~ the icon of that file will change according to the application you've chosen UNLESS you have manually changed the icon of that file yourself by copying, pasting in the get info window previously.

Okay, I'm talking about thumbnails as icons, not icons representing file-types. My bad.
