Preview Keeps Opening Previously Opened Images

Ok, so I have a whole load of jpgs taken with a Raspberry Pi Sony camera that are upside down. Before I share them I wanted to rotate them so I looked for a guide on how to do this. I followed this guide and opened all of the images. I then selected them all by using CMD - A and then tried to rotate them, this is where the problems started. It seemed to rotate all of the images 90 degrees but when I went to do it again it said I did not have permission to save in this folder. This is probably because the folder was copied from a Raspbian OS SD Card. I managed to quit the app using Force Quit, otherwise I would have to manual enter options to save for each of the 100 or so images?

Now every-time I open an image in preview it seems to open all of the previously unsaved images as well as a copy of each and the program stops responding?

How do I clear this problem and start again with preview?

Might try Settings > General > Close windows when closing. Make sure that is ticked on. Restart machine, just to be safe.

I think if you hold down the SHIFT key and open the app, it will open with none of the previously open files resumed.

Holding down SHIFT might also change to the opening animation, which causes it to run at extremely slow speed. Don't panic if you see that.

Didn't work sadly.
Whenever I open and image in preview all of the images that opened when the problem occurred open again and cause preview to lock up. I have rebooted a couple of times and no joy.

Try a Safe Boot, which clears out several caches:

Try unchecking the "Close windows when closing" checkbox, then reboot. After the reboot, launch Preview.app with the SHIFT key held down.


I'm almost certain there's a file maintained by the system that contains the list of documents last opened in Preview.app. I don't know where that is without doing a significant dive down into the bowels of the system. Maybe someone else can provide a clue.

The file is almost certainly specific to each user, and almost certainly stored in each user's ~/Library folder. You could create a new user account, login to it, and then keep track of which files get created under the ~/Library folder. The 'lsof' command in Terminal might also tell you where the file is located.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Before I read your reply I tried a couple of other things, like leaving it spinning all night to see if it would finally unlock, none of which worked. Anyway then, instead of opening preview by double clicking on an image, I opened preview by using Spotlight. This opened preview and again all of the previously loaded images (as well as the window with all images selected which is what caused the original problem occurred), but this time no spinning beachball i.e. no lock up.

Then with all the images selected, I was able to complete that last rotation of all of the images and then had to close and save all of the other images that were also opened.

Problem solved!!

I have no idea what caused the original problem, but what I think was causing the subsequent problems was that when opening a new image in preview it opened but immediately reverted to its previous stored command which this new image did not fit with?
