I recently purchased a 12.9 iPad Pro to simplify managing and editing my photo library. Long story but I finally ditched LR and decided that for my limited needs as an amateur photographer Apple Photos does what I want.

There is one particularly frustrating thing I'm dealing with though. I might shoot a couple of hundred pictures and want to use the larger screen of the iPad to check image quality prior to importing. Mysteriously Apple Photos does not offer this capability, and it's rather frustrating as I might only want to keep about 10-20% of what I shoot and importing all of it and then winding up with a ton of space wasted with the deleted items is annoying.

Is there a way to make a feature request of Apple to add this capability? Does anyone else care about this?

There are many photo gallery apps that will allow you to view the images outside of Photos. I use Android mobile, so I son't have a specific recommendation for you.

Assuming that you run iPadOS 15.x - Apple’s Photos will show you a full view of any photo/image on e.g. an external SD-card prior to import: hold your finger/pencil a little bit longer on an image and Apple’s Photo will switch to full preview.
From there you can just swipe, select, delete through the photographs on the the storage medium.

Okay, that's interesting and I will have to try it again, because I did try holding on the image thinking that would be the implicit behavior, but nothing happened.

Will follow back up on this thread with the results when I attempt again later today.

So I got a chance to try this out and got some interesting behavior.

When I long hold on the image, I do get a larger view of the image to preview before import but the top and bottom of the images are cropped off if I shot them in portrait vs landscape orientation.

Pinching/zooming doesn't work so there's no way to see the cropped off part of the image, other than to go back to the normal import screen where the images are shown with the proper orientation.

Images were shot with a Z6 and are JPEGs.

So weird.

The Files app will let you preview any images on external storage, such as SD card or USB drive.

In the preview you can pinch to zoom in and out. Swipe left/right to go forward/back.

You can Add Tags to an image via the Share icon.

After tagging all the ones to keep, Select and Move to a folder where you import them to Photos.

I've done all these except importing to Photos, because I don't use that app.

I've used the same strategy to organize a bunch of PDFs and text files into topical folders.

cropped off because of the tool/menubars? just tap the image once to make them go away.

No, it literally is just showing the middle part of the image. I can take a screenshot later today to demonstrate.

This is what the thumbnail versions of the images look like, you can see that when I highlight the camera roll and get the larger preview the one that was shot in portrait has the image cropped.

just checked, wasn’t aware (apparently I do few photographs in portrait orientation ?), happens on my idevices too. I reported it via Apple’s Feedback Assistant as a bug - I recommend everyone to do so too.

EDIT: for my Pentax and Olympus cameras photos taken in portrait orientation are just not rotated, but they are fully displayed when switching to full preview - I just have to bend my head slightly. ?

n.b.: as you can see even in the „standard“-import-view below they aren’t rotated - in contrast to your screenshot above. 11“ iPP 2020, iPadOS 15.5.

It seems though that this is some kind of bug. In my case the iPad is recognizing the orientation of the photo as taken in the small thumbnail but when that image is blown up for the larger preview it is cropping part of it off.

it is a bug. Everyone should report it.

n.b.: it might be related to shooting in JPEG… I do usually RAW… something to check ?

Yes, I have not tried it with RAW to see if there's a difference.
