Preview Problem

I'm having a strange issue with Preview lately since the last OS update.
I use Preview to open Photos and recently, the app just keeps crashing on launch. I end up "force quitting".

Any ideas?

I tried to copy another version from my brother's Mac but it would not let me replace it. Kept saying it is needed by MacOS. Is there a way to copy the file?

Sometimes a simple restart will cure a lot of strange behavior on a Mac ... first thing I do when one is misbehaving. You could also try to reinstall the update, or go back to the previous version of the OS. I always clone my hard drive, using SuperDuper (CCC is fine also) before doing any OS update or upgrade. It makes getting back so much easier if need be.

This can't be considered strange behavior. I've reinstalled a fresh install of MacOS and still the same result.

Launch Preview while holding down the shift key. Preview is probably having trouble trying to open a recent document.

Prefs might be killing you:

In your yourname/Library/Preferences
com.apple.Preview.plist
com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist

Drag them out to the desktop. Then try starting Preview.

I will try this.

UPDATE to this issue. I got myself a combo update, installed it, restarted and everything is still the same. It seems to me that Preview has issues opening only .jpg files. PDFs and other image formats are fine.
Seems simple enough. Now I just need to convert all the photos to .png LOL..

The old "test it in a new User Account" might be appropriate to rule out some sort of problem with your current one.

If you do a GetInfo on a .jpg file, is Preview set as the default app to open it? You could also right click on a .jpg, and see what opens it by default, and try opening with a different App. You want to be sure the .jpg you're playing with hasn't been damaged.
