Preview problems in OS X El Capitan

Hi,

I have two problems with preview in El Capitain. First, every time I open a pdf file, the preview opens the sidebar as well. How I can disable it (hide the sidebar) permanently, unless needed it. Second, it seems that printing in landscape orientation is not working when trying to print something from preview. It gives you the option, but it doesn't work

The sidebar bug seems to happen at random...

For the print landscape bug, are you printing hard copy or print to PDF...?

There is not a sidebar when previewing a pdf file but a page panel in the right.

Thank you for replying Eithanius and Evren Carven. It happens when printing a hard copy. Yes, the Thumbnail that opens every time I open pdf file.

HI. after installing El Capitan a few days back "Preview" has started to misbehave. Application loads OK and for example can take a screenshot and save a pdf normally. Later, when wanting to view the screenshot by loading from "Recent file and selecting the one I saved", it says I do not have permissions. Looked at those and they seem normal. Changed "user" to allow read & write too, from "read" but has not changed the issue. Same user(me) saving and trying to reopen. "get Info" suggests its OK for me to read/write....but it will not. Acrobat is OK. Other Apps OK. Other functions in Preview OK. Should I uninstall/reinstall say Preview?. Other stuff generally all seems OK and pleased overall with El Capitan. Running on a MacBook Pro early 2011, with SSD rather than hard disk, otherwise std.

I wish I could figure out the answer to this as well. It is very annoying, as I don't want the sidebar (thumbnails) taking up that space until I need to use them. I would like to make the default view to be "Hide Sidebar".

Some (few) PDF documents do not open this way, but most do. The only workaround I have found so far is to actually Hide the Sidebar ⌥⌘1, then Save the document, even though it doesn't indicate it has been changed. Once saved in this view, it opens subsequently without the sidebar/thumbnails.

I have the same problem and I find it really annoying Hopefully Apple decides to fix it.

I'm having a much different problem that I haven't seen described anywhere else after searching for it quite a few times. If I have PDFs open in preview, sometimes while I am reading and scrolling through them, the text on the pages I scroll to will start to disappear. If I highlight something, all text that is highlighted and is on the same lines as where it starts and ends disappears. If I open a new PDF, it opens completely blank like the attached screenshot. It doesn't do these things all of the time, only after I've been using the application for a while. In any case, quitting and reopening fixes it (that is, until it starts doing it again), but I shouldn't have to do that. It also will just freeze end give me a rainbow wheel pretty often.
Additionally, my "open recent" menu is constantly empty. I don't know what could be causing all of this, but it definitely only started after the update to El Capitan. I'm not sure why it seems like I'm the only one experiencing it like this or otherwise have not been able to find anyone having the same problems yet. Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this and if it's something I can deal with on my end of things?

@gadgetarms: Exactly the same problem here, except my "open recent" menu isn't empty. Started after update to El Capitan, but only on my iMac (not on my MacBook). It's really annoying and I fear I have to make a clean install... Or did you solve the problem in the meantime?

I haven't found a solution to this yet, unfortunately. I'm guessing I will have to wait to see if an update fixes it at some point
