Hi,

I have the chance to buy a second hand MBA rev a 1.8GHz from my boss' wife - she cant handle the small disk space and has just bought a new MacBook 2.4, but she's not sure what its worth - she bought it about 6 months or so ago, and is in good condition - I've tried hunting around on Google for prices but can't really see any on for the 1.8GHz rev a.....

So whatsitworth??? :)

Well, this is fairly easy to determine its worth.

Apple is selling refurbished MBAs with a full ONE YEAR WARRANTY. In addition, these MBAs are "like new." They always repair any damage completely and then essentially insure it by guaranteeing it for a year. In addition, you can extend the warranty to three years by buying AppleCare on eBay for around $110.

The problem, most likely she is not going to like the price. She paid a small fortune for that MBA, and it is just not worth it since Apple is clearing out there MBAs for so little.

Original MBA refurbished pricing:
1.8 GHz with 80 GB HDD = $1099
1.8 GHz with 64 GB SSD = $1299

I would advise you to use this as a pricing guideline and reduce the price for hers from this price. Remember this is for a like new system with absolutely no damage that Apple is guaranteeing for a year to three. Hers will most likely not include a one-year warranty.

To see those prices, go to Apple.com. Click on "Store" at the top. Scroll down to near bottom of page. On left side, will see a link for "Refurbished Mac." Select that and you will see all of the refurbished MBAs. Also, sometimes the 1.8 GHz with HDD is not listed, wait a few days and will see it again.

If it is a 1.8 GHz with SSD, she may have paid $3099 for it... be very careful to not make her "Mad" by showing her the prices on Apple.com. Most likely, she will have no clue that the value has dropped so very much... $1800 in eight months since when Apple reduced the price to $2499 and then to $1299 after stopped selling that model.

Basically, Apple came out with a revised MBA that is 1.6 and 1.86 GHz. It has 120 GB HDD or 128 GB SSD. If her MBA is one of those, the pricing is much higher. But, I assume it is not since you listed it as a 1.8 GHz which the new model does not come in - it's a 1.86 GHz. Also you said it's six months old, the new ones were released four months ago.

Best wishes with it. I hope she knows about the price drop before you discuss it with her.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

We did a quick look on eBay and she saw a couple at the £600 mark so I think she isn't hopeful of too high a price, I think to be honest she just wants something for it, but I don't want to take the piss....

Well, at least you know what you can buy a "like new" refurbished one from Apple.com for. And keep in mind that is a full year warranty.

Best wishes with the deal. Cheers.

well, turned out she wanted she wanted a fair old whack - €1100 to be precise - I declined and offered 900 but she then managed to get £1100 for it! Some people are crazy!

Problem is now I really want one (and want is the phrase - dont need one as I have MacPro at work, a MacMini at home and use a WhiteBook in between...)! But after reading up on them I´ve fallen for them!!! I know I could get one from the UK Refurb store for £949 but how long will it be before the Rev B´s start appearing? What kind of money do people expect these to fetch?

Cheers all

whoever bought it from her is an idiot, be glad you didn't make that deal. get the refurbed, rev B's when they do come out in the refurbed store are going to be way pricier at first. it will probably take a while for prices to go down.

People are paying more on EBay than they could pay in the Apple store for a refurb unit. Not every buyer cares to educate themselves before making a decision. More power to the seller in that case :)

You are much much much better off not buying from her. You get a refurbished at a better price with a one year warranty.

Or, you could ALWAYS buy the rev B MBA. It is a far superior Mac. If you want to use as primary Mac, definitely consider the rev B MBA.

Should be a $200 discount on low-end and $350 discount on high end MBA once hit refurbished store... My guess based on similar discounts on similar priced MBPs.

Would guess Apple will start selling refurbished MBAs once they sell all of the original MBAs. Could be a long time, because I keep hearing/reading about people who returned their original MBAs after six months or a year and got full refunds. Apple reduced the prices on the originals by $800 to $1800.

The new MBAs will be there in a few months. Could be later, could be next week... but based on the complaints of the original I assume Apple has a big inventory of returned MBAs. They could have new leftover stock they're rotating into the refurbs too.

Good luck.

Firstly, this guys in the UK, so stop quoting US Prices, as they dont relate to over here.

Secondly, he said he already owns a Mac Pro, Mac Mini and MacBook, so he really doesnt need a MacBook Air at all, he just wants one.

Thats the problem, I´m not sure I could stretch to the Rev B unless they get discounted as much as the Rev A´s which I´m starting to hear is unlikely...

Decisions decisions....

Thanks anyway everyone!

I suppose realistically a Rev A would be fine for what I have in mind for it...
