Just wondering what you guys think the price will be for iphone(s) coming out soon, that is without a new contract to cingular. I'm guessing the online Apple Store will just sell them with no contract and you go to a cingular store/apple store and work everything out? Hmmmm, my stupid deal isnt up for more than a YEAR! AHHHH

Well since it isn't a subsidized phone it would be the same price but that is if Apple and Cingular offer it without contract.

as far as i understand it you can only get it with the 2 year contract so you're either gna have to wait or get out of your current contract earlier

There isn't a chance in HELL that Apple isn't going to sell the iPhone to CURRENT Cingular customers. I just jumped ship from T-Mobile, and from what I understand, the 8GB phone is $600 whether I am a new customer OR an existing customer. Where you are in your contract doesn't matter.

although cingular will restart your contract probably with the purchase of the new phone.

Fine by me. It'll extend my current contract a whole month. But the nice thing is I won't be missing out on "new" customer discounts when iPhone 2.0 comes out...it's the same price for EVERYBODY. This is revolutionary in cell phone companies, and I prefer it. It sucks being a customer and being with a company a year and a half into a 2 year contract, and you have to pay $150 more for the cool new phone when you've been with the company 18 months longer than the "new" guy.

That's the whole idea. They've already got you, why should they discount anything for you? They're always after the "new" customer.

Chaps my ass, too, every time something better came along, and the best they'd offer was a $150 "service credit", spread out over three to five months. Gee, thanks...

I've been looking around online lately, and I've found a number of sites offering an unlocked iphone when it is released this June. The prices have varied, but it looks to me that the 4gb will cost around $600 - $700 and the 8gb will be $700 - $800.

I live in Alaska, so I can't get a cingular plan. This unlocked option is nice and I don't mind paying an extra 100 bucks to have it unlocked. But then again, I should be saving my money for macbooks for both my girlfriend and me. This is the year of the Apple for me.

Exactly, but I think Apple isn't going to play that game or allow ATT to do it either. They're going to force ATT to respect their current customers as much as new customers, thus avoiding any discounting of the latest and greatest of their products for the sole purpose of attracting new customers. Apple will teach companies like ATT that the device is WORTH the cost.

I doubt it will be like this. I think it will be $600 with a new contract. If you are under contract already, you have to wait until your time is up, or pay the fee to break it.

Not a chance in hell. Not gonna happen. So all of us who are with Cingular aren't going to be able to buy the iPhone??? THat makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It will be $600 whether you have a contract or not...count on it.

If you walked in and bought an iPhone even if you are under contract, its really just like walking in and buying any other phone without subsidized pricing. Cingular still gets their money from the service side of it. I guess I can see that happening.

Just like an iPod...

Uh.

What?

So Cingular is going to alienate the 50 or so million customers that they already have? Use some common sense here.

i think you're not using common sense here. when you make contract with your mobile operator and they give you that subsidized phone for free or for very small payment they do that because you commit yourself for paying them every month certain amount of money for two years.

you could just as well take loan and buy an unsubsidized phone and make down payments on your loan monthly. subsidizing phones is just operator providing finance for your phone purchase.

now, why on earth would they free you from your loan just because you really really want another phone model?? if you really want it, you pay the cancelation fee... if you believe otherwise, you could go to your bank and tell them you really really don't want to pay your morgage or your creadit card bill. good luck! :)

I'm sorry, but you're being an idiot. This is like buying an iPod. It's not the same rules as before. If you want the phone and you're already with Cingular, you pay the $500-600 for it. If you want the phone and you're NOT with Cingular, the only way to get the phone is to sign a 2 year contract and pay your $500-600 for it. It is VERY bad business sense to prevent your already existing customers from being able to buy the hottest phone on the market or by making them pay a $175 cancellation fee only to sign a new contract.

That is the most idiotic thinking I've heard on this topic. Cingular is like a club, and the iPhone is it's perk. If you want the phone, you have to join the club. THAT'S the reason for the 2-year contract requirement. I signed up with Cingular a month ago. When I get my iPhone in June, I'll sign a NEW 2 year contract thus extending my contract from May 09, to June 09. I can pick up a Samsung Blackjack for $50 from Cingular as an EXISTING Cingular customer and all I have to do is renew my 2-year contract, thus extending it the same amount of time.

The Phone Will not be Available Without A 2 Year Contract

You're right, but you won't need to CANCEL your existing contract just to get the iPhone, you'll simply have to EXTEND your existing contract REGARDLESS of where you are in said contract. I know people who have done this several times with new phones, it's not out of the ordinary.

Actually Effective May 1st 2007 - 1 - Year price with a 2 - year contract will no longer be available. Customers who have completed more then 6 months of their contract can now be offered $75.00 off the “No commit” equipment pricing in return for a new 2-yr contract. THIS WILL NOT APPLY TO THE iPhone!

But your missing the point that the iPhone will be the same price regardless. The iPhone is an entirely new business model for the cellular industry. If the iPhone was going to cost $800 unsubsidized, you can bet your ass Apple would have told everybody, because there is going to be a village riot if existing customers can't get the iPhone for the $600 they were told at the Keynote. Mark my words, the iPhone will be $500/$600, no more, no less.

That won't stop them...why does AT+T care if you have the newest phone? They don't. And they keep you locked in a plan currently if you want a new phone now. Until you provide links from Apple or AT+T I think its just wishful thinking on your part.

Every thing I've heard so far "2 years w/ a new plan"(Of course there are points in a 2 year deal you can upgrade, but never right away)

I work for AT&T an according to all of our meetings regarding iPhone the phone WILL NOT be for sale without a 2 year contract. You have to be eligible for an upgrade 3 months or less in your contract(21 months completed) THE PHONE WILL NOT BE FOR SALE WITHOUT A NEW 2 YEAR CONTRACT EITHER UP OR NEW IS FINE.

Your COMPLETELY right!

Wait a second, so I will be DENIED even buying the phone just because I'm ALREADY a customer!!!??? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard on this topic. Well then ATT is closing off about 30 million of their customers from buying the iPhone. I'm still going with "I'll be able to buy it when it's released and it'll still be $599" theory. If ATT subsidizes it, then fine, but I don't mind paying $599.

What AT&T is trying to do is have a lot of new activations(subscribers) and that's the reason why it's ONLY going to be with a NEW 2 year contract the day you purchase the iPhone.

Once again:

1. The iPhone will NOT be for sale outright without a contract.
2. The iPhone requires a NEW 2 Year contract either UPgrade or New Line.
3. To qualify for a new 2 year contract you need to be 21 months into your account.

AT&T also has VIP customers that has a list of specail offers for certain customers. To be a VIP customer your Revenue should be over $100 a month(a line) and have not had your account suspended for non payment within the last year. VIP customer can upgrade 18 months into their contract... Offers usually are for phones AT&T want to push. This doesn't mean you'll be able to do the iPhone for this I dont know the final word on that.
