Ok I have decided that the 27" is to big for my needs

So its deff a 21.5" and top spec model

I'm going to get the high end with 4GB VRAM, with I7 and also get rid of the fusion drive

But do I get 1TB SSD and 16GB Ram or 512SSD and 32GB Ram

Basically its the same price, I do run the odd VM machine and 32GB would be lovely but 16GB I'm sure would do it. I could also use an external USB3 2TB drive but do like the simple 1TB SSD job done approach

So 1TB SSD 16GB RAM or 512SSD 32GB RAM....I can't decide its killing me

Nope. That will help future-proof your machine. You can't run RAM externally, but you can run the SSD externally.

USB3 and Thunderbolt help future proof the storage. External SSD's running through USB3 or Thunderbolt are awesome and they will keep getting better as the companies figure out new ways to increase the speed.

Whats the currents speeds READ/WRITE of a USB3 HDD

Is a TB3 external SSD even faster and better than the Apple internal SSD, which I know is fast

HDD = spinning drive. Stay away from them, haha. You can get USB3 external SSD's that run over 500 megabytes per second. That's about 5-8 times faster than what you'll find with any spinning drive.

Fastest Thunderbolt drive currently is about 2,600 megabytes per second, but the Apple internal SSD's have been benchmarked closer to 3,000 megabytes per second.

MSRP on that Sonnet Thunderbolt drive above is $1,000 for a terabyte of storage at 2,600 megs per second. You can get a Samsung T5 at 540 megabytes per second for $378 (terabyte) and only $180 for the 500 gig version.

Good that your starting from the high end model - when you upgrade both the processor and drive, this way you get the improved GPU for free.

I went for 512/32. The 21.5" can never be upgraded beyond 32GB - this is a Kaby Lake limitation.

What will you be putting on the drive? If you will be filling it with data you constantly need, then get the bigger SSD. If you archive or collect data (i.e. CD/DVD/BL rips), then that data could just as easily go on an external drive.

It depend on situation..

For me 512SSD 32GB RAM..

RAM is important for virtual machine. so 27 inchi.. not 21 ..
