I am looking at getting a prime lens for the Nikon D7200 and I have been getting recommendations for either a 35mm or 50mm. Any advice? It would just be for general walking around taking pictures, no specific task.

Thanks

For a general lens then the 35mm on DX is fine, also it is good value. You might want to check your library and see what focal length you use most often, that might give you a better indication of a prime lens for you.

I would go with the 35mm but if you find a 50mm 1.4 AF-S for a good price then I would buy the latter. You might even come across an AF lens for even less money.

I bought a 50mm 1.4 AF for my F100 a long time ago. Used it on a D70 and now it's on my D7200. I used to have a hangup about it being an AF, not AF-S, and thought about replacing it but a pro buddy talked me out of it. It works fine! he said.

Too late for you, but if you don't need a wide aperture, the 40mm micro would be another option.

Nice either 35/50mm would work. I was looking at the 35mm too but ehh I have the 50mm. I think next I might try the 85mm or 105mm. Happy shooting with your prime lens.
