Printer for Photos

I want to replace my HP Deskjet 3520, really cheap printer (69.00 a few years ago). It still works fine but it does not print photos well. What I really like about it is, it was so easy to set up to wirelessly print from my mbp and ipad. I am looking for something not over $250 that might print photos better while still being easy to set up wirelessly for both devices to print from.

I have a Canon Pro-100 which I love. You can often find it post rebate for $129 and if you are really lucky for as little as $50 a couple times a year.

However I'm not sure about the wireless capabilities as mine is plugged into my computer. It is possible, but I understand it's finicky so I didn't bother. It's a great printer though.

I have a Canon Pro 1. Perfect picture printer. I didn't use it for a year and now its no longer working. Bummer. But if you use it regularly also the smaller once print great pictures.

I've been using the Canon Pixma MG series printer. I print a lot of photos and papers. So far so good. The only down side is that the ink is pretty expensive. If you sell your images, it will pay for itself.

iOS device print from them. I can either use the print module inside the app or use the Canon app. I prefer using the Canon app so that I can print without a border. You can print without a board just by going into the Canon Preferences to select the paper size and how to print them. Using with Apple printing pref and Canon gives you a lot of options to chose from.

I like the silent feature. I have the printer set to print silently after 8pm.

My previous Canon printer allowed me to put paper in a rear tray which I used just for photo paper. The MG series has both trays in the front. The printer will select the tray according to the size you want to print. Before I had to tell the printer to print from tray 2.

The Canon Pixma Pro 100 also supports printing from an iPhone/iPad. The deal that Canon has right now (through B&H or Adorama) of the printer for a net $129 is an excellent deal.

I've never tried to print from anything other than my iMac to my Canon Pixma Pro-100; I read it was difficult to set up the wifi and that even after setting it up, it often drops and is just generally a PITA.

However, because my computer is hooked up to an ethernet jack, it's technically on the network, and I was just able to print a photo from my phone, as it's also connected through the network.

Wifi setup is really easy with the Mac and a Canon printer. I've gotten calls from friends who use a PC with either HP or Epson and they have so many problems with setup that its not even funny.

Have to back this up.

Both of my main printing chooses have been impossible to set up on any network I have had and they were/are HP & Epson.; add to that neither company being able or interested in helping me set up their products (because - they say - all the problems are from other parts of the network). Apparently "don't do Apple stuff, don't do BT modem/hubs, don't do anything not made by us" is a mantra at both companies.

Printing problems other than network ones with Epson get sorted (if your machine is newish) but HP are IMO an absolute washout. I would not have one or any of their products anywhere near me, ever again. Full Stop (Period - USA)!!!

Of course other people have other experiences, but believe me, on this subject I have hours/days/months of experience and I will not be swayed.

The print head is clogged from lack of use and/or the ink cartridges sitting empty. Bubble jet printers need to be used regularly to keep working properly. Try running the jet clean function several times. If that doesn't work you might need to order a new print head -- it won't be cheap.

The Pro-100 is indeed a wireless printer.

I'm also a huge fan of this printer. Despite being a relatively older model, the print quality is exceptional, and can be be routinely found for $300 Cdn or less.

My Pro-100 has been entirely reliable via wifi for 3 years now.

I currently have the older version, the Pro9000MkII. I've been wanting to upgrade for the wireless features and because the legacy cartridge price for the older printer has become crazy.

I used HP printers extensively since a laserjet iii in the early 90's, and they used to be amazing printers. I'd been buying them out of habit ever since, and the last few I bought were total lemons, the most recent had the scanner mechanism crash and fall apart inside before the first set of ink cartridges were exhausted.

I tried my first Canon, and what a world of difference, everything works, the quality is magnificent and it is a pleasure to use by comparison. Plus I noticed a lot of small details, Canon cartridges are clear while HP is opaque for example.

I will never buy another HP product.

Canon iX6800 A3 - also prints from the Canon App and wirelessly. Takes the same ink tanks as the Pixma series and being able to print A3 is very nice...

The print clog I had was with a previous model. There was a lawsuit vs Canon that followed. I printed a lot on that printer but it still clogged. So far my current printer hasn't had that issue. The reason I stuck with Canon after the clogging, the images are great. The setup is so easy. Customizing features are a plus/win.

The Wifi setup is basically simple. Plug up the printer via USB and let the Mac find the drivers. After installing then put in your wifi password on the printer.

Regarding blocked heads, leave your printer switched on 24/7. Disable the eco modes etc.
By keeping it on you will have zero issues. I go months without printing, but have no issues when I do on my Cannon MG printer.
Works fine wirelessly from my iMac or iPhone.
