Hey all,

Like many of you, I'll hopefully be picking up the new iMac tomorrow. Since Apple has the $100 rebate on a new printer if you buy it with the iMac, I'm trying to figure otu which one to get.

To be honest, the only real functionality I need is printing black and white docs (word/excel files), with very rare limited color printing. So the key for me isn't printer quality, but how long the black ink lasts and how much the replacement cartridge costs.

Anyone have some info/feedback on what Apple currently offers?

Thanks!

im planing to do this too but not tomorrow, maybe next week.

See, they usually have $100 printers there so with the $100 rebate you are basically gonna get a free printer.. have u checked in the store what printers they offer?

Forget about the rebate. It's a siren's call. You'll do better long term to pick up a $79 Brother laser printer. Inkjets are cheap to buy, expensive to maintain. If you want, pick up a $100 printer and sell it on Craigslist for $30.

The following printers are eligible for the $100 off, taken from the Rebates page:

On the configuration page, they list three Epson printers (ranging from $99.95 to $249.95), but in the past, they have listed HP printers.

You can find a list of about a dozen printers (I believe all of which are available under the rebate program) on Apple's site.

Check out the reviews of each to see how many pages the cartridges will last, i.e. for the $99.95 printers, manufacturers have listed the following:

Lexmark Intuition S505 All-in-One - 510 pages, $34.40 for Black High Yield Cartridge on Amazon

HP Photosmart e-All-in-One (D110a) - 600 pages, $32.33 for Black Extra Large Cartridge on Amazon

Epson Stylus NX420 All-in-One Printer - 265 pages, $14.29 for Standard Capacity Black Cartridge on Amazon

It looks like the HP uses two cartridges (tri-color and black) while the others use four. Since you want the most lifespan out of each black cartridge, it might be worth using the larger inks as they are rated at three times the pages at about double the price.

Edit: As Chupa Chupa said, a B/W (or even a color) laser printer might be more worthwhile as the toners last longer, although can sometimes be slightly more expensive.

What Apple Store are you? US? UK?

US only has the options of like 3 printers from what I saw..

UK has the options from a whole list of printers at all different prices. I like the look of the ENVY it's so compact and sleek but one of the most priciest.. That's not a recommendation though.. just sayin'..

A third vote for B/W laser. 5,000 pages per cart. Skip the inkjet, or just run it as a sometimes color printer.

I'm US.

I didn't think about laser printers. I'm seeing the cheapest one on the Apple site at $229 -- but the investment is with it in the end by saving the ink?

EDIT** this is actually the only laser printer i see on the online store
