For sure it is a scam.
I use an Epson and they regularly update software. Currently my scanner is running version 5.1.2fOEN. You should have in the Epson folder in Applications a file entitled 'Epson Updater'. Try it.
If no joy go to Epson's USA site, select whatever it is, you never told us model details etc, find your unit and download drivers. Who do you mean by 'their support'? If it was genuine Epson I am sure they would have directed you to the above site.
In 26 years of using Macs never heard drivers being impaired. Out of date sure, but impaired no.
