Printer sharing on windows xp network

OK, I know what I'm trying to do is wrong, but I don't care.

I've got my laptop on a network and I can do everything I want except print. The admin won't change the printer in my office so that it's set up for sharing. I've used print manager and it can get access to all kind of printers all over the place except for the one in my room which isn't set up for sharing. Of course, I've got limited privileges on the network, so I can't tick the sharing box. How lame.

I'm going to try booting the computer into safe mode next time I'm in the office and see if I can change things that way. If anyone has any other suggestions (using shell somehow for instance) for making my life easier I'd really appreciate it..

We really need some more information in order to help you, your post is pretty vague about the printer. Is it a network printer, is it connected to a computer, what type of computer is it connected to, have you asked your admin to set it up for sharing, etc?

The printer is connected to a computer and I can see it on the network using printer setup utility. I can connect to and use other printers on the same network that are connected to computers. I'm certain it's simply because the box you tick that says allow sharing of this printer or whatever isn't ticked.

The computer plugged into the printer (or vice versa) is running windows xp and is on a network. It's XP professional (I think). Not sure which edition.

I have asked the admin, and he said "no". There is no reason why he shouldn't do this. He's just busy and doesn't want to have to walk over to my room, login and tick the box. There are other computers on the network which are setup for sharing. I can print out in rooms all over the place, EXCEPT FOR MY OWN!!!

I guess I could just get over it.

But it's just so DUMB!

BTW, my laptop is running the latest version of MAC OSX.

Well I think I followed most of that. Sort of...

I would just walk up to the administrator and tell him to get off his fat ass and fix it. If that fails, i'm sure some sort of hacking job would do it.

What about bringing your own printer to work?

no scripts or tricks. the printer is a resource of the xp box, and unless the xp says you can share, you can not share .

safe mode won't work. you will need access to a 'computer administrator' level account to change the share setting. does the 'administrator' account have a password? by default, xp (home and pro) don't set a password on the administrator account. just a thought.

since you said 'in my room', how about bringing your own printer/usb cable and plugging in direct? cheap, easy, and doesn't require a 'dictionary attack'.

There are downloadable Linux-based boot CDs that will allow you to reset the Windows administrator password. If you used one of those, it would be trivially easy to change the sharing settings on the Windows machine.... BUT that would be a very bad idea because you'd undermine the security of the machine, piss off the net admin guy, and get a bad rep for yourself.

Do what 4JNA said. Just bring a USB cable and connect the printer directly to your Mac when you need it. Much simpler and doesn't make any permanent changes to anything -- if anyone yells at you for it, it's easy to just unplug the Mac whenever that person comes in the room.

Yeah, I've gotten over the whole thing actually. I'll ask him some day when he seems like he's in a good mood. The printer cable would be easy... But it'd be strung accross the room..

Enough time spent on that really.. I'll just have to use the flash drive..
