Hi, has anybody got printing from OS X to Windows working perfectly? I have the following setup:
HP Deskjet 880C
Windows 2k3 Server
3x Windows XP machines (one with the printer plugged into)
iBook G3

I'm a recent switcher, hence the amount of Windows Boxes :(

So i had gimp-print or whatever it is installed on here (the iBook) and could install the nearest best driver (had 870 and 890 jus no 880 - tried 'em both) it communicated fine but when it came to printing a one page webpage (what i used to test it with) i got just the top bit of the page enlarged and b&w! Sounds to me like a driver problem... any ideas?

Make sure that your color settings are correct. I have found that a single HP driver is compatible with several models of HP printers. Your specific model number should not be an issue.

I believe that GIMP has a default HP Inkjet Driver. I know, my old (now retired) 710C was not included. I dont think it still is. I know that CUPS has it though. Just look and see if OSX has the drivers.

Also check www.macosxhints.com and search for "windows mac os x print sharing" if there are too many try adding "hp" and then "deskjet" to the search (no quote marks of course).

The CUPS driver for the HP DJ 880C is included with MacOS X 10.3.

lol! everything seems to be telling me to buy 10.3! I've only been using macs at home for about a month, but everything i can see that's missing from 10.2 is added to 10.3! What is the windows sharing like on 10.3? The apple website doesnt seem to give many details - or at least examples!

I've gotten it working at home from this walkthrough-

"Here is how you do it.

On the WinXP Box:

Add the TCP/IP print server service

1. Log in with Administrative privileges.
2. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add-remove Programs.
4. Click the Add-Remove Windows Components side button.
5. Open the Other Network File and Printer Services section.
6. Put a checkmark in Print Services for Unix.
7. Click OK; click Next. (The Computer will probably ask for the WinXP install disk, go ahead and put it in and the install will run automatically.)
8. Click Finish.
9. Close the Add-remove programs window.

To have the service start automatically (as a daemon):

1. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Double-click TCP/IP print Server.
5. Change the "Startup Type" to Automatic.
6. Click OK and close the windows that are open.

To share the printer for TCP/IP printing:

1. Click Start -> Settings -> Printers.
2. Right-click the print you want to share and select Sharing.
3. Click the radio button for Share as and fill in the share name you want to print to.

On your Mac:

1. Launch the Print Center.
2. Click the "Add Printer" button.
3. Change "Appletalk" to "IP Printing"
4. Enter the WinXP Computer's IP address in the Address box.
5. Uncheck the default queue radio button.
6. Enter the name of the printer share you defined on the XP machine.
7. Select your printer model (Install Gimp-Print if you don't see a ppd for your printer, restart print center and try again).

Print away! "

jeff! thanks for the suggestion - dug out my xp cd and had a go! It worked better than previous attempts. Quite quick at spooling, and on the xp box it even said username 'hob(192.168.1.101)' - very accurate :p

but...ermm... STILL the same printing anomolies... anything else you can suggest?
