First, I have none. No gripes about lack of printing, that is.
My gripe is with those who gripe about lack of printing.

Have they considered their argument? I don't think so.

What, when, and where would one need to print a document from a mobile device? Sure — something, sometime, somewhere; but more often than not, printing will take place in a location that has a desktop and printer. So, one would arguably be sitting at that desktop printing to that printer. Why would one be using a mobile device while immobile? And, I don't buy the story that folks often print to others' printers while out and about. Occasionally? Perhaps. Often? No. Plus, how convenient is that experience on a laptop, which has full printing capability. Walk it through in your head.

I'm an attorney who is often out of the office at various hearings, depositions, mediations, etc. Never — not once — have I needed to print from my mobile device.

If one needs to print from the iPad, there are many viable options available through various apps. So, the lack-of-printing argument baseless.

Plus, whatever happened to the noble pursuit of paperless communication?

You are forgetting that Apple is marketing this product as a bridge between mobile devices and laptops.
My iPhone is my mobile device and no one is complaining about printing from there. I expect the iPad to be something more.
Why create those productivity apps (Numbers, Pages, etc.) if there is no quick way of printing them?

It needs printing period.

If you don't like the functionality of the printing apps colon:
Buy a netbook period.

And comma, more correctly comma, *YOU* need it to need printing period. It doesn't need printing exclamation point!

How is it that there no quick way of printing them? If you're at a Starbucks with your MacBook Pro drafting a romance novel, and you decide to print all of chapter 22, what do you do?

1. Save the file.
2. Shut down.
3. Go home/office.
4. Connect to USB printer (unless you're networked)
5. Power up.
6. Locate file.
7. Open file in Pages/Word/NeoOffice
8. Print.

On the iPad?
1. Email the file to yourself.
2. Slide to lock.
3. Go home/office.
4. Double-click email attachment on desktop.
5. Print.

Or use PrintCentral.

But, truth be told, you will not be drafting a novel on the iPad. More likely reviewing documents, etc. But, nonetheless, the steps are relatively the same.

Why do you need to use the iPad to read - books and magazines are everywhere.

Why watch videos on the iPad - if you're near a computer - you can just watch it on there or on TV

Why... why.. why...

Really? You started a new thread to bitch about people complaining about the lack of printing. Why? If you have no reason to print, buoy for you. But that doesn't mean every has the same use case as you.

Who cares what your profession is. Lawyers aren't more or less prone to needing printing.

Case in point - what if you travel all the time and wanted to use the iPad instead of always carrying your laptop. How do you print boarding passes easily/conveniently?

Just one example.

Get off your ego trip to think that your needs are more important than others. And your new thread is just a rehash of SEVERAL other threads. You could have posted your opinion in any one of those.

It's all about extra steps.
As Steve Job said, once you have to do the extra, unnecessary step, you have failed with the device.
I didn't buy my iPad to take to Starbucks and work.
If I am sitting on my couch, and I use my iPad to book a flight, I get my confirmation email... is it too much to ask for the ability to send the boarding pass to my networked printer in the other room???

I understand you don't need it to print, but I'm not sure why you are admonishing others for expecting some print functionality from Apple's magical device.

re: #1 - How arrogant are you? You don't think so? What makes you the arbiter of who has thought something through or not

re: #2: You don't buy the story? Again - who cares what you buy or not. Even if I only print occasionally when out and about - shouldn't I have the ability if I want it? It's those rare occasions that are even more important and frustrating to NOT be able to print.

re: #3: Are you a litigator? because you just made the case for printing for the iPad in your argument that it's not needed. If other people are creating apps then clearly there's a WANT and NEED to print. Why shouldn't Apple make this possible inherently instead of relying on work-around apps? The argument is baseless? FUNNIEST part of your rant. Stop and read this again "If one needs to print from the iPad, there are many viable options available through various apps. So, the lack-of-printing argument baseless."

re: #4: I don't think anything's happened to the PURSUIT of going paperless. But in 2010, there are still several reasons (which you as a lawyer should be well aware of) that require hard copies. Have you ever bought a home? Dealt with the lending process? A lot can be done electronically - but many things need physical signatures and need to be mailed and/or faxed NOT emailed.

Again - your post could have gone into one of the many other printing threads.

ETA: You have no need to print from the iPad? Hmmm this post says differently:
I printed flawlessly from Print n Share.

Thanks for your response. We're all entitled to our opinions. However, my gripe is with those who bitch because iPad doesn't have native print capabilities.

I clearly stated that some people, sometimes, somewhere may need to print. I certainly did not make an argument for native printing; driver downloads; or USB ports.

If one needs to print, there are options available. I know about those options because I've tried them.

Have I printed flawlessly from the iPad using print n share? Yep. Have I *needed* to? Nope.

In my example, I listed fewer steps.

In your case, Print n Share or PrintCentral would fill the bill. That's the beauty of the App Store. The iPad can be a completely different machine to each owner. It's the ultimate customizable mobile device.

This thread is preposterous. Sorry OP, trying to justify the lack of a given feature is largely futile if there is real utility for real users of the device if said feature were present.

I make an exception to this rule with Flash because I find it to be a sloppy, crash-happy, resource hog.

But printing? Come on. Needs to be there. Ultimately it will.

Get off your ego trip to think that your needs are more important than others. And your new thread is just a rehash of SEVERAL other threads. You could have posted your opinion in any one of those.

I certainly didn't mean to come off as egotistic.

After re-reading my original post, I can't figure out how you came to the conclusion that I think my needs are more important than others'.

You could have ignored my commentary.

Sorry - I lost your point then. And I think you may have too. What exactly IS your point then? That people should stop "griping" about not having native printing? That these people haven't thought anything through?

Your original post and this latest one sound like a lot of thunder without any rain.

You can't figure out why I posted my comments about ego? I guess it's a case of seeing the forest for the trees. Maybe you should re-read your post. Making comments like "Have they considered their argument? I don't think so." and "Walk it through in your head" is being condescending and perception-wise making yourself appear as if you think/know better than anyone else.

Ego.

ETA: "Thunder is my point then" - OK. I'm going to start a thread complaining about posters that complain about posters who complain about printing. Haven't they run it through their heads? Have they considered their argument - I don't think so". And it can be as ridiculous as yours. Oh wait. I could just post that here. Or better yet - start a blog.

Amen, brother.

Sam,
You seem to be the condescending one. And, if I understand the definition of ego as you use it, you seem to be the egotistical one.

I appreciate your enjoyment in responding to this thread. And, your contribution to this thread has been an example of all those things you complain about in relation to my original post. It's cute, really (condescending).

Nonetheless, in my opinion, the complaints of lack-of-native-printing (whatever that means) are off base. As I stated, printing a document is as easy or easier from the iPad, when mobile, than with a laptop. How am I wrong there? And, assuming I am not wrong, where is the basis for complaints? If something is easier than the alternative, why bitch about?

If you're sitting on your sofa and you "need" to print a boarding pass, use a third-party app. Just as easy.

Instead of bitching about my bitching (which is just as thunderous as my bitching), tell me how my point – that iPad does not *need* native print support or usb ports to meet printing "needs" – is invalid.

blah - try and change the focus to me and my behavior forgetting the fact that I didn't start this thread. I didn't create the discussion. You did. Responding to your comments vs opening up a new thread to invite commentary are different.

Your complaint was vague and faulty at best "First, I have none. No gripes about lack of printing, that is.
My gripe is with those who gripe about lack of printing.

Have they considered their argument? I don't think so."

Why the gripe? Why the new thread? What purpose does this NEW thread serve? Again - none - it's been discussed on other threads and your gripe is better suited to a blog entry.

If 3rd party apps can support printing, there's nothing wrong with people wanting/suggesting/complaining that it's not done natively.

There are other music apps, eBook apps, etc - that doesn't mean that Apple should have not included that functionality natively, does it?

I've wasted enough time with you and your post. I might pop in to read your response - but as far as responding - it's not worth my time and energy. Have a great week.

I know what that means, and I respect the retreat.
I wouldn't want you to waste any time or energy on a lost cause.

Snarkiness aside, I get your point, and for the most part, I'm just ***** with ya.

As someone who administers resort wifi hotspot systems i can think of something that people will want which is the ability to print an airline ticket.

Since the ipad came out our las vegas property has already had 12 unique ipads connect to our wifi network.
