I had the original 12.9" iPad Pro which I recently sold and then purchased a new Macbook Pro 15." I knew the new iPads were coming out in the next month or so, but thought I wouldn't want one and would be satisfied with just having my new laptop (and iPhone XS Max, which I also recently upgraded from an iPhone 7).

Fast forward to today, and this new 12.9" is beautiful, making me want to drop another $1k on one.

How many of you have a 2017/18 15" Macbook Pro and are also pulling the trigger on ordering a new iPad? In what scenarios would you use each?

The idea of a new iPhone, Macbook Pro and a new iPad Pro all within two months makes my wallet cry, but I've always been a fan.

I have a 2016 15" MBP and am debating buying the 11" Pro. I sparingly use the 15" MBP and when I do use it, I don't feel I'm using it to it's potential. I'm debating selling it and splurging on the higher storage capacity 11". I guess it really depends on your use cases but I fully understand the desire for a new toy!

I have one of the first 15in rMBPs and honestly think it’s no longer needed with the new releases today. I also have a Mac Mini and my mid-term plan is to upgrade my Mini and Pro and sell my 15in rMBP.

I think the new Pro, plus the Mini for ‘robust’ back up and handling any physical media, is the perfect set up for me.

I have both the 2018 15" and 13" touch bar laptops and a 12.9" and 10.5" iPad Pro. I am waiting for my local store to get some on display and go and play. I want the latest, but my head says I hardly use my iPads.

Been using my 2013 MBP for a while now, and it’s still fully capable today for what I do. I feel a newer MBP would not add any benefit.

More inclined to get a smaller laptop or Mac Mini and an iPad Pro as new combo.

Also, finding myself quite often doing things with my iPhone with my laptop open in front of me. A shift in usage pattern.

I’m in exactly that boat. Currently have a 2018 15in mbp, an Xs max and a 10.5 ipp; I’m a roving self-employed consultant and I use all three a lot, every day. I wasn’t going to upgrade my iPad this year but I’ve decided I can afford it and so I’m humming and hawing between the 11 and the 12.9. This will be the last year for a long time that I upgrade my laptop or my iPad, if I go that way. I’m into the upgrade for the pencil, keyboard, faceid and speed. The redesign is icing on the cake.

If I pick up the 12.9, I’ll end up leaving the laptop at home 2 days in 3. If I pick up the 11, I’ll carry both every day. Depends in part on how they feel in hand. I love the tablet for meetings, conversations, focus and thinking. The laptop is for building presentations, serious writing, hosting video conferences and virtual coaching, photo editing, and productivity binges. Both have their place.

I have a 2017 15" MBP AND a 2015 12" MB (and a 9.7" iPad pro). I use the 15" MBP for heavy duty work (including when I just need a screen), and the 12" MB for light travel. I would hope a 12.9" iPad could replace my 12" MB, so that is all I would bring when traveling. But I feel the iPad is still not there: there's software that does not exist for iPad, and some things are much more complicated.

I have a 2015 MBP that is work issued and just ordered a 12.9" iPad Pro for personal use. I currently don't own a personal Mac (gave away my 2012 rMBP to my grandpa recently), but when I do buy one in the next year, it will be much more powerful than this iPad as I'm wanting to get a desktop, either a high end 5K iMac, or a lower end iMac Pro or Mac Pro. I have a 10.5" and wanted something that has a bigger display for consuming content (it's a primary entertainment device), but also for editing my 42MP RAW photos in Lightroom, drawing/painting, and for the new Photoshop that is coming. I've started tinkering around designing in Affinity Designer on my 10.5" iPad pro but need to learn more. Sometimes I use Affinity Photo for touching up photos after I export from Lightroom too and it works really well. But it usually works really well for doing one thing at a time that isn't too complex.

I think if they overhaul things in iOS 13 I could use it for more tasks. For instance it would be nice if they could add a sort of file holding/clipboard management system that you can pull down and swipe out of the way when working. It would also be good to allow use my USB-C Samsung T5 SSDs in the Files app. It would also be great if I could create project directories to share between different apps when working on something and the apps can look in that directory and automatically update creative assets as I work on them in other apps. For my Mac I will still use it to do development work and for heavy lifting such as making huge photo panoramas and to bootcamp for gaming. Also it will likely always be faster when working on a complicated project with a lot of parts and apps involved. Macs are also good for sending to large printers that don't have AirPrint and that you need to have precisely color calibrated with profiles when printing.

I have Both a Touch Bar 2016 15inch 2.7 i7 512gb and I ordered a iPad pro LTE 256 12.9. I do all my art and photo's on my iPad pro cause of the pencil. I Had to 1st gen iPad pro now i ordered the new one. I use my laptop for my Music Shows with Ableton and Machine and Final Cut on the Go. I Also Have a iMac 5k 27inch 4.0 quad I use that for heavy duty Music Production and Video Production .

I have a Late 2013 MacBook Pro 15 in, and I just ordered the new iPad Pro 12.9 256 GB. To give some perspective, once the iPad Pro comes in I will be selling my MacBook Pro. It gets used like once a month these days. I have a Windows desktop that I built from the ground up for my needs so my workflow won’t be affected but only get better. USB-C and the potential in iOS 13 is good enough for me.

I’ve got a 2018 15 inch and just bought the new 12.9. Each have their place - the MBP is for more serious productivity work, whilst the 12.9 goes out and about with me. I can imagine my use of the MBP will slightly decrease with the iPad, but I imagine that they will complement each other. And, I will use the iPad as a second screen.

Most people I imagine have a desktop and an iPad. For me, the MBP is my desktop because I move around quite a lot.

I own a late 2013 MacBook Pro 15’ and I own a iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd gen). Also just purchased the new 12.9 (3rd gen). The MacBook stays on my desk and is hooked up to a 32” monitor. My iPad Pro is used around the house.

I have a 2017 MBPtb and 12.9 Pro. Use both daily. Until on my iPad I can do audio mastering with all my plugins, use Cisco AnyConnect VPN to remote into my work Windows 10 machine, and all the various other sundry things OSX excels at and iOS simply can’t, I’ll remain a dual user.

I have both the original 12.9 iPad pro and a 2015 15" Macbook pro. I'm a teacher, and I use the iPad pro as a digital whiteboard for lecturing and and sketching diagrams. I use the Macbook as my main computer for word processing, writing technical documents, spreadsheets, and so on.

i have a 2018 MBP after retiring my 2012. I write papers for school, study for school, manage iTunes, consume videos (think video game streams that last hours), and i will use it when i start working in accounting hopefully next year.

my 2018 iPP will replace my 2014 ipad air 2. it will be used as a textbook for my e books, videos, music, and internet usage at home so as not to use a lot of battery cycles when i dont need to do a ton of typing. im going to get an 11", 256gb wifi. my phone can be my hotspot if needed.

why 256? storage for all of my music that I have on my phone, big apps, and software updates over the years. i can do 64, but i have no desire to deal with iCloud.

I have a 2013 Macbook pro and a 12.9 iPad pro. I use my iPad in bed. And I use my MacBook pro on the desk (or in bed if the iPad juice is drained). If the MacBook juice is drained i can quickly move to the iPad if I'm too lazy to take out the charger. When i'm having breakfast or cooking I can carry the iPad with me and use it. If the iPad if drained of juice I am forced to carry the MacBook with me. I pretty much use them for similar things but when it comes to more heavy use I do use the macbook. Since I graduated from school I have not been doing any heavy duty work and as a result I pretty much use both for the same things.

I do like both devices though and still want to keep both. Deciding between the two would be really hard.

The main point however is that the bed usage/being able to carry it around the house is the main reason why I still like the iPad pro despite having a MacBook pro already.

I have the following:

MacBook Pro 15 Inch
iMac 27 inch
iPhone XS Max
iPad Pro 10.5 inch

Tomorrow I'm looking forward to the arrival of my new iPad Pro 11 inch and MacBook Air 13 inch.

Yes, I have a problem.

In exactly the same boat... iPhone X’s max, MacBook Pro 13” and iPad 2018. Currently considering getting rid of the iPad 2018 and getting one of the new pros (still unsure of which size). I rarely use my MacBook but I’ll be going back to school next year and will need it more, however I feel I’ll use the iPad Pro mostly for school. My MacBook Pro only has 256gb and is almost at its max for storage. Having a hard time deciding if it’s worth it to get the iPad Pro since I have an iPad and MacBook and if so which size is most beneficial. I know the iPad Pro will be useful in school but I can do basically the same things on it as my iPad 2018. But I really really want it lol

I have the 2018 15” MbP and now I have the 2018 - 12.9” iPad Pro. Before the 12.9, I’ve been using the 9.7 pro. I use my iPad for writing notes in school. I like to work in split view with the e-textbook on one side and Notability/One Note on the other. The e-textbooks that I have to use for class does not scale dynamically like most ebooks, so split view was always cramped in the 9.7 pro. Oftentimes, I just open the e-textbook on my MbP and use the 9.7 for writing notes. On a table this setup is fine, but it’s not comfortable on the couch or bed when using both devices simultaneously. I’ve always liked the idea of a 12.9 for this use case, but I thought the footprint was just a little large. Now that its footprint is smaller, I got the 12.9 and split view has been great. I can see better because of the larger canvas and text.

The pen feels better than before. On the 9.7, it always felt like I was writing on glass. My straight lines were awful if I did not use the straight line feature in Notability. There is a noticeable resistance now when writing with the Apple pencil 2. It’s getting a little closer to the feel of writing on paper. I drew some straight lines free hand and I was impressed by the control of the pencil. My lines are not so awful anymore.

Also, at a low angle, the pencil snaps to the bottom just fine.
