Haven't seen any posts lately about the wisdom of moving from SL to ML on a Pro 3,1 - has anyone done this and feels joy? The prevailing opinion on past revs of ML seemed to be "don't bother"....thanks for your opinions.

Want my honest opinion? Don't bother unless you need the little itoys functions that ML offers. Snow Leopard was and still is the best and stable OS around. I just don't like ML.
I've tried Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on my 3,1 2008 Mac Pro for testing and works fine. Though Snow Leopard is still my main OS on my other HD. I do not need the new features in ML and happy with Snow Leopard. The advantage of ML are having more new drivers for other videocards

you want the eye candy or some program you really must use got an upgrade that dont work in SL, do the upgrade. Otherwise, no. But if in some near future, ML supports newer and better graphics cards and you want to upgrade, that can be compelling.

This is already true. ML supports Nvidia PC cards like the GTX570 with native drivers. I edit in Premiere Pro & support for this fast cheap CUDA card is an obvious reason to upgrade to ML.
First off, the Mac platform, in general, is one where versions of an OS and general support for those versions are as temporary as the hardware that they run on and often times, it becomes prudent to upgrade to the next one (with the notable exception of OS X 10.7 Lion). This is much unlike the Windows platform where there is seldom an impending rush or strong reason to move to the newest version (with the notable exception of Windows Vista) and where you can linger for many years on a single version (i.e. 98/NT4, XP, 7) before ultimately making an educated upgrade to a newer OS. Much unlike Windows, OS updates on the Mac platform are fairly smooth and cause no hiccup.
Given this, as someone who very much loved Snow Leopard, and who was less than thrilled with Lion (and didn't even run it on his own hardware), I love the crap out of Mountain Lion and see little reason for you or anyone to avoid it. Given that support for most things tends to require at least the last version of the preceding OS, there's no reason to stick to Snow Leopard if your software will work in Mountain Lion. Plus, as long as your Mac Pro has more than 2GB of RAM in it, it'll run great.
I don't know about you.. but I clocked my Mac Pro booting snow leopard to the desktop and mountain lion.. The results were shocking. Snow Leopard booted up so much faster than Mountain Lion.
I think I will stick with Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro for a longer period, and hopefully 10.9 will be a lot more streamlined and will boot up faster.

I've always been curious about this as a rationale. There may be other very good reasons for choosing one over the other... but this is one I don't understand. Though it may be because I just sleep my systems. One key click and it's on. How often do you turn off your system? I'm at a short (for me) 9 days uptime. When I do absolutely need to restart the system, I go and make a coffee. I have no idea how long it takes to boot up... it's just up and running when I'm back.

I run ML on 3,1 with 16GB of RAM, and an SSD for the OS and it's rock solid. Stop spreading horrible rumors.
You don't have to use Launchpad, etc...and you can turn off certain annoying features (like forced use of iCloud on TexEdit, etc.)
I highly recommend ML, it's definitely the best OS X yet. It's speedy, has extra features and is definitely customizable if you know what you're doing.
SL is very archaic for me now when I use it at work.
To each there own.. but there are many like me who prefer Snow Leopard. I have no use for IOS integration, launch pad, etc.. facebook.. nada..

I went back to SL after Lion, and did notice that it seemed to be a step back.
I still MUCH prefer expose over mission control. But even though that's my most used feature, all of the little things add up (even if features like notification centre annoy me).

I appreciate all of your replies. This continues to be an interesting issue, at least for me. I think a move to ML is an inevitability for my Pro, although I've been holding off and hoping the new model Pro would appear and make my decision moot.
I've been running the latest ML on my 3,1 for a few months now. I do miss a few aspects of SL, and a few minor things about ML I haven't taken time to tweak away yet.
But overall the ML experience has been fine. I'm being productive.
The intermediate trip using Lion was not so great. But if I had gone straight from SL to ML I think my favorable impression of OS X would have been generally preserved.

In Mountain Lion:
- Open System Preferences from the Apple menu
- Click on “Mission Control” in the top group,
- Uncheck the “Group windows by application” box.
- Now a three-finger swipe up or tapping the F9 key will show the traditional Expose-style window manager like in 6.8 and etc.
As indeed it should be! It's just a vastly superior and more highly polished OS. There's absolutely no reason not to upgrade! The speed increase alone should be motivation enough!
If there's ever a feature or default modal behavior you're not into just google how to get back to the old way and you will find 20 different tutorials showing you several ways to do so (as wih every revision of every OS ever made...)

I upgraded to SSD boot drive, which dramatically improved my boot time so the OS time isn't really a problem anymore. It was starting all the background apps after login that was my big problem.
Now, the POST time is my big time. I normally leave my computer running 24/7, so boot time isn't important anymore.
