Hello forum,

To my knowledge the Pro Display XDR does not feature a hardware kalibration.
Does that mean, the Pro Display XDR cannot be used as a "reference monitor" for
color grading jobs?

Thank's a lot!

Hello forum,

To my knowledge the Pro Display XDR does not feature a hardware kalibration.

There are those that if can't directly 'turn the software knobs" of the hardware LUT means it doesn't have calibration.
In that context, yes. In the context can't do any calibration, not really.

"... Support for performing in-field recalibration of Pro Display XDR and creating custom reference modes, which includes adjusting color primaries, white point, luminance, and gamma, will be available in an upcoming version of macOS Catalina.. .."

That is likely a 'don't hold your breath waiting" version of macOS Catalina. There is probably also a delay and/or issues with specific hardware calibration equipment (drivers ) too over the short term.

It can be for some jobs. In job for any context... not as much.

IIRC if your delivery specs require you to calibrate and show proof of such (eg. you are operating a Dolby Vision certified grading suite for a Netflix show) you cannot use the XDR. As far as I am aware you cannot upload 3D LUTs to the device. You are better off asking this question over at LiftGammaGain, which is a dedicated forum for colorists.

Even cheap BenQ monitors have the ability to upload hardware LUTs. It’s not much of a money-saver on a $5K display.

Whether using a breakout LUT box to conform the video signal on it’s way out of your Mac provides the same degree of calibration as directly adjusting a display’s internal lookup table is a question above my pay grade.

Guys: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/teranexmini8k
apple brought down the price of the XDR by deliberately externalizing features like hardware calibration and 3d luts which not everyone might require.

Not sure how the XDR is coupled to this. That external box takes SDI input and produces HDMI output. The XDR doesn't fit anywhere in that mix ( Thunderbolt input primarily. Underlying takes an two DisplayPort display streams. A different basic data encoding format than either of those other two. )

As I linked in post #2 above , there is suppose to be underlying hardware to adjust the calibration. It is missing software, firmware, and driver to be enabled. I suspect there is different low level API that 3rd parties will have to deal with that will be substantively different than other monitors. [ would also be a small sum that it will use the new kernel driver API that Apple is rolling out with 10.15 and later macOS versions. Which is another hurdle to get over that can impact timeliness . ]

But if you need that, you can get the teranex and are ready to rumble.

Ready to rumble with another HDMI input monitor. If the primary delivery platform is a device with HDMI that would be a good sanity check for the "final delivery point" reference check. But the XDR wouldn't be playing the final reference check role.

this thing has display port: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/teranexmini8k/techspecs/W-TERAMIN-32
i spoke with an apple pro sales person and he told me that this was designed in close conjunction with apple for the xdr display.
