I asked Apple chat today if the Pro Vega graphics in the iMac Pro has ECC HBM2 memory and also if it supports 10-bit color. Their answer was yes to both questions. Perhaps someone can verify this.

Why would you say definitely yes on the RAM? Because as far as professional GPUs from AMD, the Vega Frontier Edition supports 10-bit color but lacks ECC RAM, and only the WX 9100 & Radeon Pro SSG have ECC RAM. Also, you would think Apple would be advertising those features if they were present.

Some people need ECC memory to correct errors in computations due to background radiation.

Okay, according to the VBIOS for the Pro Vega 56, it uses Samsung KHA843801B memory, which is the same as the consumer RX Vega 56 & 64. It appears the ECC variant is Samsung KHA883901B according to the VBIOS for the WX 9100. Interestingly, the Frontier Edition also has the KHA883901B memory according to the VBIOS, even though AMD doesn't specify that card's memory as ECC. It's possible the Pro Vega 64 uses the KHA883901B memory since it's 16 GB. We can confirm that if someone gets the VBIOS info.

...snip...

That is true but that type of corruption is very rare. Yes, it would be of concern for mission-critical applications, but for video files a pixel here and there being corrupted will go by unseen by the naked eye. Personally I prefer the performance offered by GPU non-ECC memory.

What is interesting then if the Pro Vega 64 does indeed have the ECC KHA883901B memory then someone who wants faster non-ECC memory should choose the Pro Vega 56.
