Once you slide the unlock it goes away. Why cant we have it set behind the icons all the time??

Ive seen some ppl that have done it, but they had modded theirs, added different icons and such. I dont want to go down that route (yet) but I just dont see the point behind a wallpaper that goes away when you unlock the phone.
 
neither do i. lets hope this gets fixed soon.
atleast its some form of customization, not something you get on apples portable devices
 
Yeah, I gotta agree. From the moment I first saw the iPhone, I thought the wallpapers looked stunning, and I'm always messing with them on my iPhone, but they really aren't present on the screen very much.

There is no point. We DO know, however, that SpringBoard.app is capable of rendering icons over a background. You can see that illustrated here:
