Probably dumb question but... is there ram in an iPhone or iPod?

Forgive my lack of basic computer/iPod understanding, but if regular iPods have mini hard drives, and the iPhone has a flash drive like the Shuffle/Nano, but it runs a stripped down OSX, does it need ram like a computer? Or does the flash drive preclude that necessity? I don't understand. Can anyone enlighten me?

Well wouldn't this affect network browsing speeds on iPhone Safari? I wonder what the ram really is then.
