Hi sat down to upgrade my 2009 Mac Pro (5.1 flashed) with eBay X5677's (with IHS) today. I used washers (unsure why they do not make contact with studs) and thermal cleaning and paste and pad strips. I unhooked the fan connector and plugged them in manually before mounting cpu heatsink. All that seemed good.

I took my time and all went well imo. Held my thumbs and booted up, looked good, much faster boot time and general responsiveness. But system is showing only 1 CPU 4 Cores and it should be 2 (and 8). No other faults reported. Memory is showing 3 out of 6 installed (initially it showed 1066mhz speed but a Pram reset fixed that).

Is there a way to figure out which cpu is at fault? I can see no lights on the cpu board.

Any other good advice?

Is this normal? can the system run on 1 CPU? Can the dual cpu system be used with only one CPU?

All help much appreciated?

Daniel (SWEDEN)

Whoo, oops!

Note to self, fault find a little before asking for help ;-/

To others doing this upgrade (and possibly same mistake).

The heatsink wasn't tight enough! Took CPU board out retorque'd and voila!

I originally torque'd very carefully and evenly until my fingertip-nerve-endings told my ape-brain (behind the-thick-skull) that it was just tight enough but then I had the problem with second cpu so I went for lunch, came back, took tray out and the heatsink screws were a lot looser than I had left them.

So apparently they loosen a bit. Maybe thermal paste thinning out, with a little cpu heat perhaps.

Maybe I'll take the tray out again in a few hours (before thermal paste cures completely) and tighten them again?! Maybe I'm being too careful?!

BTW:1- I was about to post screen dump with serial, but mostly i see people blurring that. What exactly is the risk with the serial number?

BTW:2 -So these CPU's have the AES instruction set. So I should be able to use whole disc encryption without much performance penalty. Would doing this complicate my move to a RAID 0 set for boot volume? Setting it up and moving volume around I mean?

BTW:3 -How much thermal paste is "too much", mine is coming out the sides, but not so much as to "fall down" the sides. Just a "ring" around the edge so to speak?
