Hi

I'm fairly new to Mac OS X and my Macbook has developed a strange problem that I'm not sure how to fix.

Basically 8 or 9 times out of 10 when I insert an optical disc (doesnt matter what kind cd/dvd data or music etc) it will not appear on the desktop. Also there is no way to eject the disc other than to reboot as my Macbook thinks there is no longer any optical drive attached (the ata section is blank in system profiler, itunes says no burner attached). I have search the forums but most of the threads I find seem to have to do with parallels which I dont have installed.

I have already tried to repair permissions.

any help much appreciated.
