So i just bought my macbook today, black, standard built.

When i turn it on, i hear the sound, the screen stays white for abit, then this folder with a question mark sign appears flashing.

Reading the macbook user guide, i then tried restarting while holding down the option key. Nothing happens. However, the folder with the question mark sign does not appear anymore but the screen stays white.

I then tried inserting my Utility Disc 1, which boots up an installer for Mac OS X. Everything goes well until the part where im asked to "select a destination volume to install the Mac OS X software.". No options are available for me to select.

Hence im curious, is my problem simply my hard drive is broken or isit something else?

Thanks for listening to me out. Its my first time buying a mac and you have no idea how freaked out i am right now.

I bought it from my school bookstore.

Am i allowed to return it at an official apple store or do i just return it at my school bookstore.

Thanks for the quick responses.
