Problem with Applecare registration

So I'm trying to register my recently purchased Applecare with my new iMac, During the registration process after I have entered the Applecare number and my serial number and purchase date, I get this...

We're sorry, but this product does not appear to be eligible for coverage. If you believe that your product should be covered, you can submit your Proof of Purchase. If your product is eligible, it will be added to your agreement later.

What's the problem here. It seems very inconvenient to have to send in proof of purchase to register my product.

Is this normal and is there an easier way to register my Applecare?

Since you bought AppleCare with the iMac, there is no need to register it. The following is from Apple's web site:

If you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan at the same time as your Mac, iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, or Apple display from the online Apple Store, Apple will register the AppleCare Protection Plan for you. If you purchase your AppleCare Protection Plan and your covered product separately or elsewhere, you will need to register your AppleCare Protection Plan.

Your AppleCare Protection Plan coverage starts from your hardware purchase date. Registering your AppleCare Protection Plan at a later date does not extend your coverage. In fact, there are many benefits to registering your AppleCare Protection Plan as soon as you purchase it.

For example, after you register, Apple will have your hardware, AppleCare Protection Plan, and personal contact information on file. When you contact Apple for service or support, Apple can access your information right away and start addressing your issue, rather than spending time verifying your eligibility.

I bought my Applecare after I bought the iMac.

Anyway I figured it out and this might be of interest to future Apple buyers.

When you register the Applecare it asks you for your serial # and date of purchase. I bought my iMac from BestBuy, but since BestBuy is a re-seller of Apple products, Apple shows the purchase date as the date BestBuy bought the unit which in my case was one month and 6 days before I bought it. So basically I lost a month of coverage buying from BestBuy.

Now I could imagine the possibility of someone buying an iMac from BestBuy that had been sitting in their inventory for 6 months or more. This would basically result in the buyer potentially losing 6 months of coverage should one buy an Applecare for it. Something to consider.

By the way I have to mention that the Applecare tech that I talked to was absolutely great and a joy to talk to. It turns out he is actually working out of my current home town just in from Germany on a student loan. I ended up chatting with him for sometime about our weather and the differences between the states and his home country of Germany. If this is any indication of the support I can expect from Apple in the future, I am going to be a lifelong customer and support the company in every way I can.

I had faced the same problem as well. I bought my MBP from BestBuy Canada and the date of purchase was reflected a month and half earlier in Apple's registration records. I contacted Apple support and the support guy told me to scan and mail them a copy of the Best Buy's purchase slip. Within 4 days of sending the email, Apple updated the date of purchase to the actual one.
