Problem with contacts on iPhone. . .

Some of my contacts on my 2G jailbroken iPhone are in alphabetical order with the specific letter divider (about 20%) and the others are all at the end after the last grayed out divider with a "#" in it.

What is causing two sets of contacts? Some in order and the majority just listed at the bottom.

I've checked and both groups have email addresses and #'s. I can't think of any logical reason this separation is happening.

I now have to flip over and over to this list after the all the alphabetical dividers just to find a #.

I presume there's something simple I'm missing but I have no idea what it is. I have no "Groups", only "all contacts" as well.

SAME DANG PROBLEM! most contacts won't sort under correct letter cat.

unlocked/jailbroken 2G iPhone here. same problem. Just a few of my contacts will appear under their correct alphabetical header/category, and the rest are grouped under the "#" symbol at the end. Last names are still bolded and they are in order THERE, but they will not go to beneath their correct letter header.

Here's the deal...

What I figured to fix it is this:

Edit a contact under the # category.
Enter the name field. (all these contacts have a Phonetic first and last name field for some reason)
In the phonetic last name field enter any letter
Click "save" button
enter name field again
remove the letter in the phonetic last name field
Save and then go back to contacts and you'll not see it listed under "#" anymore. It will be alphabetized.

Haven't gotten an answer of what causes this, what the phonetic fields have to do with it or how to do them all at once but they came from an import from AddressBook for me.

man, that's going to be a pain. I'm an iPhone newbie (and haven't used Address Book much in the past), so I'm not totally clear on what the difference is between name entries and "phonetic" name entries.

Settings->Mail, Contacts...-> Contacts -> Sort order: First, Last

Phonetic field...

Not sure where the Phonetic field came from either. I assume it lets you Spell a name like it sounds if you have a hard one. I don't find any setting for it either. I do know that it works as for getting them in order.
