Sorry, this is a bit long-winded.

I was just over at my aunt and uncles place to set up their new iMac and Airport Express and thought while I was there I'd do a bit of maintenance for them. They have a 12'' PB which was still on 10.4.4 so I thought I'd d/l the latest update. Went to software update>check for updates but about half way through checking it would just stop and not do anything.

Then I tried to repair permissions to see if that would resolve the issue but as Disk Utility opened it came up with an error message saying it had to quit and to try opening again. No such luck, the same thing kept happening.

So instead I thought I'd d/l the update manually from Apple's website. During the install process, when it came to the window to select the destination to install to the HD didn't show up, there was just nothing there so I couldn't progress.

I then ran Disk Utility off the install disks, repaired permissions, repaired the disk because it said there was a problem with it and it said the disk was repaired. Went back to install the update again but the issue again hadn't resolved. Disk Utility also continued to have the same error.

The computer is running fine, but there's obviously something amiss somewhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. :)

The ol' favourite:

and without wishing to ask the obvious - you downloaded the PPC update not the Intel one?
DOH!

You'd think by know I'd know to do that. I'll try it when I'm at their place next. And yes, I did download the PPC update.

Thanks for your help! :)

I don't know why it wouldn't be, but put the disk in, select it as the Startup disk, restart, then re-select the HD as the StartupDisk to "bless" it.
(Not sure if this is still relevant under Tiger - or if it ever really did anything  - I'm sure I used it to fix an unrecognised system disk under Jaguar once on a Beige G3... )

It's odd that the HD isn't showing up at all tho. (If only the real guy was here.. damn his personal life)
