My son recently gave me an iPhone 4s dual band phone which was previously on contact to the UK network Orange. Because he omitted to get it unlocked at the end of his contract I can't get it unlocked without paying them a fee AND waiting 6 months on a PAYG sim deal.

So I bought a Gevey Ultra S which, I am assured, should work with iOS 8.1.3 which is on the phone. Following Gevey's instruction and using an Orange PAYG sim, I get the 'phone unlocked' message on the screen. But after clicking 'Accept' I get a message 'Activation Required'. When trying to activate I get the message 'Sim not valid'. The phone is not jailbroken as I understand that this is not necessary on a GSM or dual band device.

I'd be grateful for any observations.
