Using 0.9.9x86_64

Lately, when I put a DVD in, handbrake scans it and then tells me "no valid source found".
I'm having to rip with MTR and then use handbrake.

Thoughts?

So HB just "suddenly" started not finding a valid source? Or did this occur as soon as you updated to 0.9.9 ?

Does this occur on multiple discs or just one ? Need more info.

It was relatively soon after the update if not immediately.
All discs

Well, if it was right when you installed 0.9.9 can you copy an activity log from an attempted disc scan and put it on pastebin.com and link it here so I can offer more help ?

Hmm, you should have gotten a popup when you first installed 0.9.9 that VLC could not be found ( 0.9.8 used pre vlc's libdvdcss.2.dylib for decrypting However as of vlc 2.0 it was omitted from vlc).

Therefore, you should have gotten a message saying that vlc media player isn't supported so either use a third party app or you can download the proper library and install it which would direct you to this link:

http://download.videolan.org/libdvdcss/1.2.12/macosx/libdvdcss.pkg

That installer will install it on your system and HB will then find it.

I have VLC on my system.
1.1.6

Ahh ... That's way old.
Updated to 2.0.8

I'll see if that helps.

Um, it won't. Like I said VLC >= 2.0 has no libdvdcss.dylib!

If you don't want to install a third party ripper like MTR you will have to use the above linked library installer to install it on your system. Then HB can use it to handle it on its own. Thats the only way HB 0.9.9 can decrypt dvd's on its own.

If you find yourself in St. Louis, I owe you a beer.
Cheers.

Hey, what is MTR? Do you have any other details?

I have had a bunch of my VHS converted to DVD and the first two DVDs I have managed to successfully rip to MP4 with Handbrake.

The third one and arguably one of the more important ones is showing “No a valid source found” when generating the preview at the start of the process.

I have a tried a few suggestions such as deleting the preference file, but to no avail. I am using the latest version of Handbrake and macOS High Sierra.

Does anyone have any suggestions what could be wrong and what to try? Any help is greatly appreciated as the contents of this DVD has great sentimental value.

Try MDRP - it's the easiest and super quality software that i've ever come across for ripping a DVD. The first 5 DVD rips are free.
Brilliant piece of software.
I'd stay well clear of Handbrake after the Malware incident a couple of years ago. It was truly inexcusable! And pretty horrific.

MacTheRipper, it is a really old ripping app for DVDs, but still works well on most DVDs.

Is it copied protected? If so the first part of this. The part under "get software".

I was using an older MacOS, which Handbrake used VLC for libdvdcss, but I found out that when I recently upgraded to MacOS 10.13, it no longer made using libdvdcss from VLC on Handbrake possible.

But there is a super easy fix in the link above.

Yeah, that sucked, luckily I wasn't affected by it.

I really like Handbrake, and find the UI really easy to use. I have tried a couple other ones, but nothing seemed as nice and Handbrake.

Maybe I might look into MDRP, but I probably will just stick with Handbrake.

I don't know about the others, but the real strength of HB lies in the x264 (and now also in x265) encoder. It is the best free AVC (HEVC) encoder when it comes to bitrate vs PQ tradeoff, hands down.

Did I mention, that you can use HandBrake to re-compress a HDR10 movie and still preserve the HDR??
You just need to use 10-bit version of x265 (built in to current version of HB) and add special tags to the command-line field of the encoder. Works like a charm.
Also, have been using this method to convert YouTube VP9.2 HDR clips into HDR10 MP4 clips that appleTV likes.

handbrake does not read MY dvd's using Osx el cap no matter how i download that libcss thingee, so my mini is using MKV which has a bigger and better output screen. im think i have the subtitles situation solved as well.hope this helps

Are you saying Handbrake won’t read them do to the encryption?

You can try this how to.

It is from Macworld and is really easy and quick to do. Just make sure you have a new copy of Handbrake.

I just did it a few days ago And it worked perfectly.

thanks for the reply, i get the 32 bit 64 bit warning which i dont understand and tired of trying to understand so i stopped using Handbrake on el cap and tired of forcing things to work on these apple products, the other software seem to convert a much better picture and works better with VLC. VCL? i always hated abbreviations

When I used El Capitan, which was only a few months ago, Handbrake used VLC to decrypt the DVDs, you didn’t have to open VLC, just have it installed.

But, it sounds like you already have VLC, so I’m not sure what the issue is. I don’t think I got 32bit warning when I used El Capitan.

I would tell you to post it in the Handbrake forums, but it looks like you are happy with other apps.

I've been using MDRP for several years now, with excellent results with anything I throw at it. It has a 5 instance free trial, so it is definitely easy to tell if it will meet your needs, and worth taking a look at. Very easy to use.

MDRP (Mac DVDRipper Pro) is basically the replacement for MacTheRipper. I used to use MTR, but MDRP does so much more and is compatible with the newer Mac OS's. Plus you can install it on more than one computer you own, at the same time.

It is old in the sense that it is the grandfather of DVD ripping programs. It is new in that it is updated, with 5.2 coming out soon with better support for Mohave. [5.1 does work though].

They are entirely different programs. MDRP is more "mac" friendly in the sense that it has a simple interface and is great when it just works. MTR can be simple to use, but then it has a whole ton of options. ISO extraction, Rip and Rebuild, Title - MainFeature extraction. It has DVDProbe to solve problems to analyze and handle problematic disks. I don't even pretend to understand all of them. It is the most powerful DVD ripping program that I have seen. Doesn't do blu-rays though. Purchase process ($10) is rather complex since you have to make a donation via PayPal to get the license. License is tied to one machine. Upgrade your OS and you have to request a new license (no charge).
