Problem with iMac audio

I was recently using skype to video chat and the audio kept turning on and off, every 5 seconds or so for about 1 second each time. At first i thought the audio was just cutting out, like being muted, but then i tried listening to a song in itunes and it has the same problem, only the song time display freezes when the audio freezes. Same thing with any audio, even streaming in safari. Does anybody else have this problem and have a solution? I'm running 10.5.4 btw
