Problem with importing photos on iPhoto

I just got a new MBP and I wanted to tranfer my pictures from my old Powerbook so I copied the iPhoto library and placed it in the Pictures folder instead of importing it. I did this so that each roll would still be separate instead of iPhoto grouping all the photos into one import. It seemed to have worked fine except that all my photos since last October don't show up, yet they are in the iPhoto library where I copied them (I can see the rolls in finder but it refuses to open in iPhoto even when I try and import from the proper location. It says it is being used by iPhoto library.) this is my first experience with iPhoto 08 and I don't like it very much

So can anyone help me get iPhoto to show me my photos when I run it? Than

Did you copy and paste the full folder - the actual iPhoto folder with the photos along with the other database files?

If so, it should work. I have done this many times. But if you are missing photos, then it sounds like the database is corrupt.

Does it work properly on your prior Powerbook? I assume you have an older version of iPhoto then. As far as i know, you should be able to copy and paste the full folder, but when iPhoto 08 launches, it should find the prior version of your files, and convert them to the new iPhoto version.

You do not want to import them into your new database, because you will lose all the keywords, descriptions, folders, etc.

Sounds like this did not work. Copy the top level folder, just under "Pictures" and then when you are done do a "get info" and look at the size of the folder and check if it is the same on both computers. Also make sure it is readable/writable by the correct user account.

If all else fails Apple has a utility to transfer "everything" to a new Mac, it move user accounts, iPhotos, all the old apps and so on over.
