Hey everyone.
I just updated my appletv which i was using via airplay to listen to my music library at my hi-fi system. It was connected via SPDIF (optical out) to a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) and i was able to listen from that.
After the update to iOS5, i get no sound from from the digital out when it is connected to the DAC. Changed an optical cable, and sound was back but it sounded like it was coming from the abyss and completely digital with a lot of hisses, like listening to low quality internet radio.
Does anyone have an idea if this can be fixed?
Thanks

The DAC is powered yes and is working fine, as I connected both my macmini and MacBook pro via optical and all was ok...

weird. maybe try a restore install? maybe there is a setting that got turned off by default in the new OS?

I experienced the exact same problem on all three of my ATV2s with the update that I installed yesterday. I am running two of them headless and (optical audio only, no HDMI) into DACs. All I get is hissing and pops too.

ZouKou, have you tried fiddling with the Dolby Digital setting? As soon as I can connect a tv to the headless units I'm going to try that and see if there's anything else in the menus that looks like a culprit.

Hualon I m using it in the exact same way as you do.
I ve played with the dolby settings and the sound settings in case that was the problem but nothing came out.
This whole thing seems to be working with the ATV2 connected to a monitor via hdmi and to the DAC via SPDIF and i boot it with both connections active. If the HDMI is not active, the thing doesn't work. If i pull the HDMI while the setup is working it continues to work.
If i start the ATV2 without an HDMI cable plugged and I plug it after it boots, nothing comes on the display.
So for the time being i m using a silly 10m spdif cable running in the apartment and the ATV2 is connected on my monitor in the other room where the mac mini is

My appletv2 is connected to a vizio soundbar via optical, and no longer plays dolby digital after the update. Not sure what the deal is. Worked before and no changes were made to the setup, besides updating the appletv software.

The update that came out, fixed just the movies section that wasn't appearing on the ATF after the new iOS. The problem with the sound via spdif still stands.
I hope I can find an older atv to buy around...

Same deal for me. I don't have a dedicated DAC, I just go straight from my optical out to my B&W amp/speakers. All I hear is lots of loud popping sounds. I went into the ATV settings and turned off Dolby Digital (former setting was Auto). That seems to have fixed the problem, though I assume it's only providing a stereo signal now.

@Wirawee
Does your amplifier put a flag on its display regarding the signal its getting from the ATV? For example 16bit 44KHz or something similar to that?

Have you guys tried starting a thread on the Apple Discussions board? If this is a software issue, the more people Apple knows are having the problem, the sooner it will get fixed.

Good question. No, it's a pretty simple amp/speaker combo and doesn't give me a lot of feedback.

I switched the Dolby Digital setting from "Auto" to "On" last night and I no longer was getting the popping sounds. I will test again tonight and post my results.
