Has anyone had problems with beta 2 and iTunes backups? I just restored via DFU (after making a backup) but when I go to try and restore my data it'll go through the 5-8 minute process then error out saying 'iTunes could not restore the iPad because an error occurred'. No error codes or anything. If I use the backup I made with b1 however, it gives me no problems. Same with the backups I made on the 8.4 beta.

Makes no sense. No big deal for me though, since I didn't add any important data to my iPad between the last backup I made with b1 and today. Anyone willing to test this please?

I had this on beta 2 and iPhone 6 Plus, I bought Decipher Backup Repair and it repaired my iOS 9 beta 2 backup and I was able to restore it onto my iPhone.

Wish I had know about this a few days ago. I had to restore and my last salvageable Backup I could find was May 27. I lost over a month of :apple:Watch/Activity and Health data.

I'm now double backing up to iCloud and iTunes.

You can still salvage that backup, for me it was game data that I didn't want to lose...

This happened over a week ago so if I'm able to restore from that backup then I will loose the last week of data. Is there some way to combine the backups? Also I now have my current backup on iTunes AND iCloud.

Well, daily basis backup is a good idea.
Then, if possible you can use third party apps to browse backup, and migrate the data to a newer one, if possible. I didn't try doing so before. :(

Searching around a found an App called iBackupBot that sounds like it might work. However since the backup is encrypted (or at least the data I want) and an :apple:Watch backup then I don't see how it could be accessed by a 3ed part app.

Does anyone have any experiences with :apple:Watch backups and encrypted Health data retrieval?

You can try iexplorer. This one is the one I use.

Those apps cannot access the backup. iOS stepped up its security since iOS 8.3, so no apps can access the backup, Decipher is the only thing that worked and my backup was encrypted. It removed the file that was making iTunes not restore my backup.

That is what I thought. With encryption there should be no way any App could access data. I guess my choses are:

A) Use 'old' corrupted Backup and loose last/this weeks data
B) Continue on a put the lost data in the rear view.

Did you manage to restore an iOS 9 backup to iOS 8.4? Which decipher program did you use and how?

Encrypted iOS backups can be accessed by certain apps like Decipher ONLY when given the password to the backup.

Reply this to OP.

If you can purchase iExplorer, you will be able to view your encrypted backup.

I have made a backup of my iOS 9 beta 2, with iTunes 12.2. When I use iexplorer, I will be asked to allow keychain access since I store my backup password to keychain.

Third party apps don't need to do some sort of "crack" in order to get access encrypted backup. So this is possible. And of course, this is also possible to migrate two backups.

I'm the lead developer for Decipher Backup Repair -- there are a lot of good questions/topics brought up in this thread!

(I'll try to keep my post as neutral as possible so it doesn't get moderated away ;))

  • As of today (iOS9 beta 3), we've had good experiences with some custom builds of DBR that strip the iOS9 backups down so they can restore in iOS 8.4. You'd have to contact us to talk to me about this and have me send you a custom build link. (Although hopefully I'll have it worked into an update very soon.)
  • Re: encryption. If you provide the backup password, some third party apps with the functionality can decrypt files in the backup. :) Just be sure you trust your software vendor ;) and/or use a backup password that is different from passwords you use for online accounts. We use the password completely local on the machine and do not store it past the run of the program.
  • Re: backup merging. This is a fun thing that we've been tossing around making a tool for. Depending on what you want to merge/replace, it can be easy or harder... merging databases and related files. If you just want to replace a file, you can use DBR to "clean up" the backup after so it will restore. I just looked at my health database specifically, and it would take some work to merge to independent databases together. Theoretically, if you got a good merge of the databases you wanted, we could drop it into an existing backup and use DBR to sew it back together for a valid backup. If someone's really desperate to do this, and got the database merged, you could email us to talk to me about it, since I'd have to help you replace the database and get it re-encrypted. Although I would make some serious backup copies of the database before you tried it, just in case. I think only the healthdb_secure.sqlite would need merging, the healthdb.sqlite just looks like configuration for the app and devices, which you would want to keep the current version of. I love tinkering, but sadly probably not worth the effort unless you lost a lot of data.
