Problem with my Mac mini

Hey guys,
I've had my Mac mini for about 2 years. Until now it has operated without any problems whatsoever. Since Friday it started to act weird. Where normally it runs every program and app very quickly, now it's alot slower. Is there anything that I can do to fix it? I've recently moved all my movies to an external hard drive (500mb WD my passport). So space isn't an issue. Could it be a virus?

Have a look at Activity Monitor (Applications / Utilities /) and select All Processes and sort by CPU to see what the culprit may be.
Also check the "System Memory" tab to see what your "Page ins:", "Page outs:" and "Swap used:" are.

There are currently no viruses for Mac OS X in public circulation, only a handful of trojans and other malware, which have to be installed manually via entering the administrator password.
The only anti-virus you need to protect your Mac is education and common sense.

No, it can't. Read the link simsaladimbamba posted. For performance issues, there are a few things you can check:
  • Check your Login Items under System Preferences > Accounts to see what you have automatically launching.
  • Also check /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Users/yourusername/Library/LaunchAgents/ for items launching at startup
  • Look at what widgets you may have running.
  • Launch Activity Monitor and change "My Processes" at the top to "All Processes". Then look to see what may be consuming system resources.
  • Take a look at the System Memory tab at the bottom of Activity Monitor to see if you have excessive "page outs", a sign that you may benefit from more RAM.
  • Make sure you're not running any 3rd party antivirus app, as many of those will drain resources, reducing performance. They're not needed to protect your Mac.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I've noticed that my computer has been a little slower booting up since I installed Adobe CS5 a week ago, and it has been slightly more sluggish at times. It might be in my head, but I took the advice above and found the following:

LaunchAgents
com.adobe.AAM.Updater-1.0.plist
com.Logitech.Control Center.Daemon.plist

LaunchDaemons
com.adobe.SwitchBoard.plist
com.apple.remotepairtool.plist
com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist

Could these (specifically the two Adobe ones) be causing slowness at startup, and is it safe to delete these?

The Logitech Control Center is used to manage custom settings for your mouse. The others can be deleted without problems. It may or may not help with slow starting.

Thanks. I deleted those two adobe files and my system boot was 15 seconds faster. Very cool.

Ok so i opened the activity monitor there is a dashboard client taking 25%. Everthing else is running at 0.1%.
 
Yep ive turned some of the widgets off.
The only other suspicious file i see is titled 'kernel_task'
 
Id normally figure this out sooner but i took delivery of a new shipment of very potent canabis not 4 days ago. Everything seems to be more difficult
