Problem with my mighty mouse...

Hi everyone,

I am using this wired mighty mouse for the pass 6 months and recently it had a problem regarding on the track ball... the track ball is able to scroll up just like normal... but when scroll down, it is no longer as sensitive as scrolling up...

Does anyone knows what happen to it? or is it normal to be that way?

Yeah! That's a normal issue with them.. What happens is dust, grit and dirt gets trapped between the rollers and the ball and eventually the tracking goes.

Here's a photo of what they should look like when cleaned - might like to add, your MM isn't user serviceable, I got pissed with one of mine and threw it at the wall!!

If it's less than one year old, return it to Apple and perhaps they'll replace it for free!! I'm on my third, within a year.

Well you can clean the ball with a Q-tip dipped in some rubbing alcohol.

Yes, I did some clean up every week or 2 but this problem occurs after all...

Nah, the first replacement had a connection issue and the third just died after a few days... lol Apple said they're sorry and swapped it out.
If you got the MM with your system and it's covered with AppleCare, I think, it'll include your mouse too!!

I recently brought another one for my MBP and it arrived kinda DOA - connected but didn't move!! It's since being swapped and everything is A, OK!

I haven't had any issues with my wireless Might Mouse but the problem you're experiencing is common. If your mouse is not covered under warranty or is no longer eligible for support, I'd suggest you look elsewhere for a mouse. Depending on what you're doing, Logitech and Razer mice are all good in my books.

simple get a piece of a4 paper. roll the ball around a bit on the paper. good as new.

Had the same thing happen with 3 mighty mouses. I just get free ones from a friend that works at Apple. But my main mouse is a logitech which has worked to 4 years without a problem.

This happened with my older mac a few months ago, all I had to do was put some water on the tip of my finger and rub it along the top of the ball. Then I got a piece of paper, flipped the mm upside down and rolled the ball on the page. All the dirt etc. ends up on the paper and your mm is as good as new!

I have this problem quite a lot. Turn your mouse over and run it on the track ball firmly and quickly. It should loosen any dirt inside there. It always works for me.

I can confirm that this works, but only temporarily.

My used this site as a guide to strip my BT MM down.

However as I knew it would happen again I didn't bother glueing the skirt back on. It was quite easy to take apart after the first time. However on the 5-6th go the rollers have stopped working completely (maybe the ribbon cables have cracked). So instead I bought a wired MM.

fix for non-scrolling mouse

My wireless mouse had same problem. Just pick up mouse, press down both buttons, turn it upside down while holding buttons and move the ball. This fix (found it on another forum) fixed my mouse.

Yes it works. For an entire day if you are lucky.
Trust me, A4 paper doesn't posses any grease/dust/chocolate/ganja/pube/whateverelseyougotstuckinthere removing properties. Hence if you want it to work again for any decent length of time, you need to rip the thing apart and clean it properly and thoroughly. But being non serviceable (IE, Apple glued the damn thing together pretty tight) its a pain in the ass to get to the rollers to clean them. Particularly if its a wireless version. Then you need to clip/screw/glue it together again.
By the time you have done it to a mouse 2 or 3 times, it starts to look pretty ropey. I got sick of repairing mine, and trashed it. Got a proper Logitech mouse now instead. Its miles better, and has never needed any servicing of any kind in the 2+ years i've had it.

As much as I like Apple stuff. The mighty mouse is truly awful. I guess it was a nice idea though..
