Wondering if anyone else has ever run into this. So my mother purchased a new Mac Mini and I walked her through setting it up and using her time machine backup from the old computer to restore to the new one. (She is east coast and I am central) Everything appeared to have went fine but one thing. When I try to request a screen sharing session to her computer it opens up her desktop and then immediately closes. This happens no matter if I initiate the request or if she does. This happens no matter what remote software we try to use. (VNC, Team Viewer, etc.) It is almost like some kind of firewall or other software is resetting her network connection each time this is attempted.

Any ideas? My gut feeling is to just have her bring the Mac Mini back with her during Christmas and I will rebuild it fresh, then just restore her files and programs. Figured I would reach out and see if anyone else had experienced this.

Same thing happens both on ethernet and wifi. Originally she actually had both connected which normally would be fine, but had her try both directly connect and just wifi but same problem. Good suggestion though thanks.

Have her run a speed check on her internet connection.
A slow connection could account for the issue.

Internet worked perfectly. Actually a bit of information I didn't include is she has her old iMac connected and we can do screen sharing on it just fine with no problem.

What type of computer are your using (Mac/Windows/other). I do a lot of screen sharing with several people generally via Apple's screen sharing initiated out of iMessage but have never run across the issue you describe (i.e. screen share starts, but then immediately closes). Thing I have had is it they get the request to share screens, accept, but it never connects so a bit stumped with the issue. That said I would try the following:

1. Compare setting with old computer to insure all set the same
2. Try FaceTime to test if a video connection works
3. turn off any and all virus/security/firewall software and try
4. If you have another computer or access to a Mac try connecting with that to determine the issue is with your Mom's machine

Which model mac mini and what version of macOS? Make sure the screen sharing software has permissions to capture screen, audio, input, etc. .. Settings > Privacy & Security

Brand new Apple M2 (8 Core) 16GB memory with the latest OS and patches. We are just using the built in Screen Sharing software built into the OS. Made sure the setting were enabled in the System Settings -> General -> Sharing -> Screen Sharing

That is super frustrating about the screen sharing not working between your mom's new Mac Mini and your computer. A few other things I would try:

  • Make sure both computers have the latest OS updates installed
  • Check the firewall settings on both computers and allow connections
  • Try another screen sharing app like AnyDesk just to rule that out
  • Does FaceTime work okay between the computers?
If all else fails, I think rebuilding it fresh like you mentioned is a good idea. Hopefully restoring from a backup doesn't cause any issues.
