So i bough a pulse sapphire 580x 8gb for my 5,1 mac pro. Everything was running great so I decided to install world of warcraft to just mess around. About 5 min into playing and the fans are full blast .. screaming loud and it just never stopped .. even when I exited the game it just remained at full blast .. I eventually shut down and rebooted and it seems ok now but havent tried gaming again .. wtf gives ? I have mac fan control so I can see the fans in my system and the only one that was raised a bit was the PCI which sometimes goes to around 1200 rpm. I reset the NVRAM when I rebooted.

I am running catalina. Any ideas ? No way the 580x is running that hot .. it was pretty crazy .. I checked the temps and they were around 70ish while gaming but even afterwards when the temp went back down to 40 it was still screaming.

Was a brand new card? Most of these cards on eBay are undervolted for mining with custom ROMs. Also, some cards have dual ROMs, mine does, see #10. You should flash an original ROM to be safe, if the card was not factory sealed.

Also I am using catalina from dosdude .. not open core

Is there a way to flash the bios thru osx ? I only see windows and linux ?

I don't think it matters what OS you run if you think you have an undervolted GPU known to cause problems. Did you searched for a way to flash the ROM under macOS? I personally don't know any other way then the one listed on the website, IMO if there would be a way, it would be posted on TPU site.

You did not answer if you have a ROM switch on your card, neither. That is very important because you can test each existing ROM and see if it solves the problem. Also is useful because you can flash one ROM on one side and still be able to have a rescue ROM to boot from. Make sure you flash the Quiet mode ROM, in case you decide to use OpenCore, which you should do anyways instead of dealing with a patched OS.

I don’t not see a rom switch.

I don’t really understand the open core stuff that is why I went with the patches OS. But I probably should look into it cuz not have a boot screen or boot switcher really sucks.

I did not find any way to flash in OS X .. so I am trying to install windows on another hard drive but it is being a real pain because I need to install OS X first then set up boot camp because for some reason I cannot boot from a windows usb installer flash drive that I made on another Mac. I put my gt120 back in so I can see a boot loader and the usb just doesn’t show up no matter what.

here is a pic of the video card .. maybe you see something I don’t.

The ROM switch would be on the end directly opposite the cable ports.

Ok so another problem now. I need to install windows on my Mac so I can flash this video card but that is turning out to be impossible to do.

I thought after installing high Sierra on another drive I could go into boot camp and install windows .. wrong .. it doesn’t give me an option to create a bootable usb .. not even an option.
All it allow me to do is install windows 7 or 8 from a cd ? Wtf

so I go to my other iMac I have and create a bootable win 10 usb installer .. boot my Mac pro holding option and the only thing that comes up is my main hard drive .. no usb drive shows up. But if I make an OS X bootable install drive it does .. wtf

I am absolutely lost on what to do .. all I want to do is install windows so I can flash this gpu.

help?

Well the seller said they did not modify the firmware on the 580x so who knows. All I know is that the fans are off most of the time and when I play a game .. the fans are quiet for about 3-4 min and then bleeding loud and they stay that loud after I quit the game for at least 3 min.

Is there any software for osx that lets you see the fan rpm on a gpu ?

In terminal:
ioreg -l |grep \"PerformanceStatistics\" | cut -d '{' -f 2 | tr '|' ',' | tr -d '}' | tr ',' '\n'|grep 'Temp\|Fan\|%\|(W)\|Hz'

Let's go back a bit. First, do you have the manual for your card? It'll tell you where the switch is if it exists. Second, do not install Windows unless you're using a DVD to install. Without OpenCore you may damage your ROM using a USB because the USB will create a UEFI build. Remove all drives except the Windows drive to be and install via DVD. This will be Legacy Mode. You can use startup disk in system preferences to boot between the two OS. Now, Legacy installation will not allow you to install on a NVME. Use a SATA disk. If you decide to go OpenCore you can convert that disk to UEFI to be seen as a boot option in OpenCore's BootPicker. I'll stop here and let you decide.

Edit: Do a SMC reset and try the game again. You should always SMC reset when installing new hardware.

I did a SMC reset and no change.

No manual either.

@jetjaguar follow the details posted in #21 and you will not need to install anything. But honestly, if you trust the vendor, all these steps are not needed.

Edit: TechPowerUp surprises me again, they now have an UEFI shell version of AMDVBFlash 2.93 listed. Technically, this should be the best way to flash your card, since it doesn’t depend on your OS, just requires that you have a motherboard supporting UEFI. Just copy the files into a USB drive formated as FAT32 and boot from it. I did not tried this, but in theory it should work well and IMO is the safest way. At least you have a way to check what ROM you have installed in your card.

Try this command to get the ADAPTER ID of your card:
Code:
amdvbflash -i

There are tons of tutorials to guide you step by steps how to flash your card, you should make also a ROM backup before anything else.
