Problem with Screen Saver in System Preferences

Whenever I go into System Preferences and then Desktop & Screen Saver, I get the spinning beach ball and have to force quit to get out, every time. This has happened since day 1 and is the only thing this happens with.

I didn't think it was that big of a deal, but lately when the computer goes into sleep mode, it is taking longer and longer to wake up.

Anyone else have a similar issues. Any advice on a fix?
