So, It's been years I had set my non-Gmail Google account that uses 2-step verification to my iPhone, just to get some Calendars I have subscibed to, through the Apple Calendar.
For years, there was no problem at all, I used my app-specific password and all went fine.

Currently, they made it so that you no longer need to use an app-specific password, a window straight from Google pops up and you have to enter your credentials. After you do so, you get an sms with the code, that you have to enter in order to proceed. So, after the code gets accepted, right before the menu where you get to choose which Google items you want to sync (Mail-Contacts-Calendar etc) the procedure is interrupted and you have to do it all over again (with no success).

I tried another account that has Gmail set up and it works fine so I guess the problem is that my Google account has no Gmail address under it...

Anyone else with this problem that has found a solution, without setting up Gmail?

Thank you in advance!

What do you mean by non Gmail? Are you referring to Google Apps for Business?
No, sorry, I wasn't clear!
I have a regular Google Account, in which I haven't set up a Gmail address.
Instead, I set the account using my main email address, that is an iCloud email and that's the one I use to log in to all Google Services (Google Photos, YouTube etc).

That's an odd situation. I would try adding that email as a Gmail account. If as you say it's tied to your Google account it should allow you to add it that way. Then you have the option of turning off email but still use the calendar option.

Actually, in the iOS settings it only gives me the option to add a Google account (if I go to Settings and then at Mail, Contacts, Calendars). I don't see an option to add a Gmail account, just a Google account... Unless I misunderstood what you mean!

I think I do remember being able to log into Google services using a non-Google email address. Seems like there was some communication from them in that the whole shebang was being eliminated and users needed a Google username.

Or maybe I'm just imagining it.

I'm sorry...yes that's exactly what I meant. Add it as a Google account there.
That's exactly where it doesn't work anymore, like it previously used to :(
Do you also use the same email address for iCloud on your phone? I wonder if it's something to do with that
Yes, I do use the same email for iCloud! But I've been using it both as an iCloud account and as Google account in the iPhone settings for years, so I'm not sure that's the problem!
I'm almost sure it stopped working when they stopped requiring you to have an app specific password for iOS Mail, when you have 2-step verification enabled in your Google account...
Now, when you go to set up your Google account in iOS Settings, the process goes through a Google-looking interface, like the one we see in Google apps.

Yes, you can actually still sign in with an email that is not Gmail! I use all Google services with my iCloud email with no issues! And I don't use it as an alternative mail, it's the main email address for my Google account.
The problem begins when I try to add a Google account in Settings, using the iCloud mail, which is the only email address attached to my Google account. And this is something that used to work for years, but for some reason, it no longer does :(

What happens when you're logged into that account at Google and go to gmail.com?

It gives me the option to sign up for a Gmail account and set up a new Gmail address that is then going to be the main address for my Google account, in the place of the iCloud email address...

That's what you're probably going to have to do. As you're not using Google email what's the difference?

I just didn't want to create another email account that I won't use anyway, as I already have the iCloud one, plus the one from my domain... But I guess I will have to, after all :(
The fact that it used to work just fine some time ago, puzzles me though!
Thank you everyone for all your answers!
