"This accessory is not made to work with iPhone".

I see that message hundreds of times a day. Every time it comes up the sound in the speakers will stop working (however the one used when calling someone still works). Sometimes they will start working hours afterwards, but most commonly not.
If I plug it in to the dock it goes away and sound comes back instantly. If I unplug it the message comes up just a few seconds after.

I've restored maybe 5 times.
I have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off (read somewhere something might try to contact the iPhone, fail and give the error).
I have tried to clean the dockconnector both at the iPhone and the actuall dock. As far as I can see there's nothing in the dockconnector.

What am I missing?

Mine is a hardware issue, according to Apple. Just got off the phone with them. We tried all the resets. Nothing seemed to work. I can hear music via the head phones but not from the speakers themselves. They are sending me out a phone, had to pay $30 for the loaner phone (basically overnight shipping back and forth).

Hopefully I won't be without MY iPhone for too long.

Sometimes I have a similar problem with plugging and unplugging the headphones. The iPhone somehow doesnt recognise the headphones being unplugged and stays on the headphone setting. Plugging them back in and manually pressing stop in iTunes generally seems to fix it though.

Just a thought if anyone else is having a similar sort of difficulty which is relatively close to what is being discussed.

Yup we tried that many times... Couldn't get the speakers to come on. It all started with the "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone" message. Started to get this after I had the phone charging. Was using the standard charger that came with the iPhone.

Was on the phone with the apple tech guy for about an hour trying to get rid of the message and get the speaker working. No luck. The headphone speakers work fine.

It just suddenly stopped.
I now have 3 hours, 25 minutes of usage and 3 days and 12 hours of standby and it hasn't showed up one. The strange thing is I didn't do anything. I didn't restore it, I just gave up since it didn't help.

I really hope it won't happend again, or else I'll have to use the international orders to send it to the U.S and get it repaired/swapped.. since I'm in Sweden I wouldn't have much of a choice, even though I think it's a bit pricy...

"this accessory is not made"

I'm having the exact same problem.
I intend to schedule an appointment with one of the "geniuses" tomorrow.
Always feel like I'm being wiseguy referring to the in-store help as geniuses.
"Hey genius, get over here" - (spoken in Artie Lange's voice).

Since this will be my third replacement I'm going to insist on a new one. I'm sure the white-boxed ones are refurbs.

Now you can all say (in Artie's voice): "yeah, good luck genius":)

The genius took my iphone to the back room, came out shortly thereafter and told me there was some corrosion on the dock connector (which he removed) and my phone was two software versions out of date.
Seems like the problem is resolved.....so far.

The problem came back for me after my 5th day of standby when I finally had to recharge it.. When it was charged again, the problem was back.

I found a tip at another forum suggesting to take out and put back the SIM-card once. Even if it seems like it has to do with the dockconnector and nothing else. The suggestion was that if one had knocked over or dropped the phone the SIM-card might slightly change position in the tray and it would help to put it back like it's supposed to be.

The message came up for me maybe 20 times this morning, by lunch I saw the tip and took out and put back the SIM-card. And now, 2 hours later, the message hasn't appeared. Yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
