I found this excellent TidBit article titled OS X Hidden Treasures: Services - which sent me on a hunt to learn how to better use Services.

When I highlight text in a page I am viewing in Safari, or any other Apple application, and choose 'New Email with selection', Mail opens with a blank email - the selected text does not appear in the body of the email - and I cannot close that blank email. I have to force quit mail to get rid of it.

Can anyone offer any help with this?

I've had Macs since 1985 (Apple ][ since 1978) and will admit this was the first time I ever tried any functions from the Services menu. But it seems to be working properly for me under MacOS Monterey and Apple Mail. No problem closing the e-mail window either.

Maybe it's related to the versions of MacOS and/or Mail you're using?

I have a 2020 iMac running Sonoma.

That article is from Feb 2016, so I wouldn't be surprised if at least some part of what it describes no longer works on Sonoma.

Apple’s built-in services are the first thing I disable on a Mac, because I can’t fix them.
If I make my own service in Automator, I can always improve and fix it.
This one with the “New Mail Message” action does the same thing as “New email with selection”, but it’s working because at first run it asks for permission for Safari to control Mail (Privacy & Security – Automation).

Another way to create a new e-mail with the selected text: “Use the Share menu on Mac” https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh40614/mac
