Problem with wired xbox360 controller and Rage

When I play Rage on my macbook pro and I move the left joystick forward it will go forward for a second but then start moving my character backwards. It also does this in the main menu, it will briefly move up to the next option but then immediately move back down. This problem only started recently and the controller was working fine before. The controller also works fine in other games. If anyone could help me out that would be awesome
