Hi all, Just wondered if I could have some advice on my late 2009 iMac.. To begin, its a Late 2009 21.5" model, I haven't really done much in the way of upgrades apart from upping the RAM to 12gb. So last weekend I thought to bring it up to speed and install a flashy new 2.5" WD 500gb Solid State Drive using the OWC cable loom to avoid the fan issues..

So install day came, I followed the steps one by one, installed the drive and powered up. I used disk utility to format the new drive etc and then I chose the option to install my Time Machine back up where I was greeted with a "Remaining Time: 2 hours" prompt, which was fine.. I decided to leave it alone and let it do its thing. This is where the issues started!

I came back after approx 50minutes to find a black screen and absolute silence, the LED on my mouse had gone out.. The computer had completely shut off.. Pressed the power button and no response.. Unplugged from the wall, plugged in and pressed power again.. Zero response.. So I thought, lets put it back as it was just to be safe. So I removed the new drive and popped the stock drive back in and it fired up almost straight away, with a message to say that the computer wasn't shut down properly.. Either way it was back.

However, I have come across a few things since I've put things back.. Firstly my wired apple keyboard is completely dead, no response and the computer doesn't recognise it being plugged in, so I assume that some sort of power issue cooked my keyboard? Luckily I had my wireless keyboard as a back up.

Next issue is that when I insert a CD into the drive, I hear the disc spinning, a few clunks and the hard drive knocking, then poof! the computer completely shuts off (black screen, no power) however I do get a very dim light from my mouse's LED. It just took me 15 minutes and a lot of reboots to get the system back on and to eject the disc.

I know its nearly 10 year old and its served me well but it seems that Apple really doesn't like you changing things. Could this be my iMac is slowly dying? It appears to have become quite temperamental.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Which cable harness? The 2009-10 does not take the same as the 2011 and later. That is not likely the issue because your fans would roar at full sped if you made that mistake.

If you pulled the screen, there are a number of small connections. Failure to get all reconnected properly is my best guess.

Hi Mike, thank you for the reply :) Thats right I pulled the screen, and fitted the OWC 2009 wiring harness with the external thermal sensor etc, I double checked all the connections before reassembling and as we speak the computer is up and running with no errors showing. Its just a bit strange that I can't insert CD's anymore without it shutting off completely.

Two possibilities. a) The connections aren't that tight to the CD player and something vibrated loose (or something got pinched). Is it aligned perfectly with the slot?

b) The problem is internal and the DVD drive needs to be replaced.

You're going to have to go in again. You might not have to pull the screen—remove the screws and lift it from the top and see if there's a disconnected wiring harness.

With $20 USB externals easy to find, how badly do you really want to chase this problem?
