Hi, hopefully someone can help me with this, it's testing my patience, after several weeks of fiddling.

So I've recently upgraded much of the hardware and some of the software in my old MP 2,1 - there's now 20GB of RAM, the XP941 is humming along sweetly with a new install of Lion, to replace the old Snow Leopard (Yosemite to come, once I'm feeling brave enough), and there's a shiny new SSD just waiting for an install of Windows 7 x64, since the old install of Vista x32 is horrible, and can only use 3GB of all that RAM.

So of course I tried using Boot Camp Assistant (v.4.0.4) to create the new partition and install Windows. Having ascertained that an old Mac Pro cannot boot off a USB stick (that would be just too easy, wouldn't it?), I'm using a proper original Windows installation disk in my DVD drive. Now, it's fair to say that my original SuperDrive is filthy inside and doesn't work 100% reliably at the best of times, so when my original installation attempts failed (spin, whirr, spin, whirr, eject), I acquired cheaply a 2nd hand but good condition IDE DVD drive (might upgrade to a SATA drive later, but didn't want to introduce any new factors into the problem) and installed this.

Progress! Of a sort. Depending on the jumper settings I use on the drive (CSEL or Master) I seem to get either the grey screen with flashing apple, folder and no-entry sign, or a black DOS screen with a couple of choices in white text, but no means of selecting either, since my keyboard does not appear to be recognised.

Any thoughts, guys? Thanks!

Not sure in the world where you are but I bought an old Acer DOSBox for £20.
I installed it on that and transferred the drive to my 1,1.

An option for you?

Cunning idea…. Actually, extending that logic, could I not put the drive in an external USB enclosure, hook it up to my MBP and install it on the drive that way?

Not sure if you can Windows to boot from/install to a USB. Forgot, after install whilst still in the PC I installed all the BootCamp drivers I could find.
