Problems installing Windows XP Pro w/SP3 using Boot Camp

I bought a MacBook this week for the purpose of running Windows XP off a partition. I ran the Boot Camp Assistant, partitioning 15 gig of my 160 gig hard drive for the Windows OS. Boot Camp prompted me to insert the Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 3 installation disc I'm using, so I did. I followed the Boot Camp instructions exactly, and the installation seemed to be on its merry way ... until the screen indicated there were 33 minutes left.

With 33 minutes to go, the screen seemed to freeze (except that I could move the cursor/mouse) but the installation never advanced. I waited about an hour and it was the same, so I held the power button down and restarted the computer. It booted in Windows and tried to resume installation with 39 minutes to go. When it got to 33, it hung again.

I've noticed other people having problems with this, but no solutions. Any ideas, folks?

I want to be able to boot into Windows XP, not use Parallels or any other program.

I had the same problem.

I tried to install xp with service pack three and the same problem just stalled out a few minutes earlier than yours. Eventually got tired of it and installed using vmware yesterday. Seems to work well enough but would have rather had a bootcamp installl. My system is a late 2006 intel imac with plenty of ram and extra hard drive space. Anyone have any ideas.

I noticed at 33 mins that I was being prompted to produce my product key.
Is there a splash screen prompting you to do the same?
Maybe it is a problem with the boot cd, that you are not able to view installation instructions, so the process isn't continuing.

I know that with version 2.0 of Bootcamp you have to install XP SP2 and then upgrade to SP3 later after you have updated Bootcamp. Not sure which Bootcamp you have but this could be part of the reason.

Correct. That's the last official statement from Apple. Windows XP installation CDs with a slipstreamed SP3 are -not- supported by Boot Camp. You have to install XP SP2 first, then install Boot Camp, then install the Boot Camp updates to 2.1 and ONLY THEN SP3 can be installed to Windows and is supported. Apple should really fix this.

I wonder what the supposed problem is, exactly? I did an install of an SP3 XP straight in to a new Boot Camp and it seems to work 100%. I do still have my SP2 disc around, so if I ever did have the problem, I can do it the Apple way.
