Problems playing burnt DVD's

Hey my new gen-iMac can't play burnt DVD's saying the source can't be found or something along those lines.. why is this and is there a program that WILL play it?

I've tried front row, dvd player, DivX player and ripping it via HandBrake all of which boasted no results with the same outcome "no valid source".

How were these DVDs created? I think, though I could be wrong, that the DVD Player application expects there to be both AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders along with the standard .vob and .ifo files on the disc. If any of the "parts" so-to-speak are missing that could account for why they aren't playing on your Mac. Am I correct in assuming that you've tested playback with another computer or with a set-top (connected to TV) player? Report back.

yeah the folders are all there and it works fine with a standard dvd player and tv.

Hmm does it playback audio CDs or non-burnt DVDs like commercially purchased/rented, etc? I think logic would dictate that if everything works except these discs then it would be an issue with the discs and not the computer or the drive itself. As far as alternatives for playing back the discs, you could try another attempt with VLC player, that thing is a beast when it comes to playing back a variety of file formats.

some professionally pirated material may have an imperfection in the clear hub near the center. i think the reasoning for this is that it creates an imbalanced disc that can't be read in computer drives (because the spin rate is higher) but can be read in a regular dvd player.

also, have you tried playing it in bootcamp?

the dvd player included with leopard has ALWAYS worked for me.
