I have an ATT Black iPhone 4S 64GB. I'm trying to update to 5.0.1 via iTunes, and I'm getting an error message saying " The iPhone 'John's iPhone' could not be updated. This device isn't eligible for the requested build". The phone isn't jailbroken, however there is jailbreaking software installed on my computer that I used for a couple of friends. But my phone, the phone i'm trying to update to 5.0.1 is not jailbroken. I have plenty for free space on the phone, and have tried to update it about 20 times now. Every time I try to update, I keep getting the same message. Any ideas guys?

Thanks,

At the moment, I'm at my computer with only a wired internet connection.

Not sure if you missed it as it was several pages after your post but this was in response to your post on the MR front page article:

Is your hosts file pointing to Cydia? That would result in the error you're seeing.

I saw this, but I'm not really sure what he meant. I sent him a PM, but haven't heard back from him, and I did a google search, but there is a bunch of stuff with modifying text files, which I don't think is a good idea!

Well, it's likely that one of the jailbreak-related stuff you have installed on your computer has modified your hosts file, so you have to modify it back to what it was originally.

No that's fine. You want to modify the /etc/hosts file (make a backup of it if your wary) and make sure there isn't anything in there blocking apple.

Okay great, I directed myself to the host file, and change it back to the original. There was this address for the gs.apple.com so I had just commented that out, and now all is working!
